my thing is I make things from scratch, I read that the flexdrive was a better driver than the LM317, and I wanted to see if it would be possible to build one myself. I guess I didn't go about asking the right way.

Oh ..... well, they are two totally different classes and types of drivers ..... LM317 based is a linear driver (can work only with input voltages bigger than the ones required from the load, basically, and dissipate the excess of power as heat), where instead flexdrive is a boost driver (works with input voltages lower than the one required from the load, increasing it) .....

If you need a better linear driver, you can try to use LM1117 (not 117) or LED1113A, that have a lower dropout, or LT3080, that is also better, or to build a sink or source current ..... all these types of drivers works better than the LM317 ones, and can be easily built as hobby level ..... if you need a boost driver, there are some projects in the forum too, based on TPS63000 or LM3410 too, that still can be built at hobby level (LM3410 ones are the easiest ones), also MAX668 is good, but it require an external mosfet, so the PCB is a bit more complicate .....

But if you need a boost driver and you can't work with SMD components, self-building is a bit problematic, cause almost all the ICs now are available only in SMD packages .....
