Question Samsung laser diode

I just took apart my old pc and remembered a kipkay video i saw. i wanted to make one of those burning laser flashlights and decided to open up the dvd burner. it turns out that its a Samsung dvd burner, and now i have this rectangular laser diode with 12 pins!!! what ones do i need to run current through to get the diode to work? I dont want to mess it up somehow, and the video only shows 3 pins for his diode.

i have the worst luck, so trial and error for me isnt usually a good idea when i only have 1 diode to work with. any help would be great.

Not a lot you can do with that diode. We tend to use the 5.6mm TO18 package which, as you rightly point out, has the three pins, (most usually). These ones fit into the modules we normally use and the pin outs and characteristics on the commonly used diodes, (PHR, LOC, etc, etc), are well understood and documented. Any others are a matter of trial of error I'm afraid but look at it this way - That diode cost you nothing so there's likely another free one just around the corner, (try your local PC repair shop. They're bound to have some they can just give away or accept a token amount).

If you want to build your own burner then best not to pay attention to any laser related Kipkay presentations. There's a lot of missing information that will likely end in damaged components or health. Take a look at the links in my sig for a basic guide and a more in-depth look at what you need to do.

Good luck and welcome to LPF! Don't forget to introduce yourself in the, "Welcome", section and tell us a little about yourself. Loads of reading ahead to for you but it's time well spent and will hopefully answer some of the questions you will want to ask but have been asked a thousand times already. Check the, "Rules and Stickies", section too.

Thanks. I will definitely check those out. I'm not building a burner though. I just want to make a burning laser pointer. I always wanted one but the commercial ones cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars! My aunt used to run a computer repair shop, so maybe she has an old dvd burner that isn't Samsung. Thanks for the advice though.

A, "Burner", is a euphemism for a burning laser pointer here, sorry for the misunderstanding.

Not so!!! Sure you CAN spend hundreds and an unscrupulous seller may try to charge thousands but look here for a cheap kit if you want to build yourself -

Laser Hosts and Laser Kits - Items - OdicForce Lasers Online Shop

Or you can buy a custom one from a member here. If you're in the UK or Europe then I can help you out, if in the US then there are plenty of builders there. Have a look for kits from Jayrob, Eughemus, FlaminPyro, and others in the, "Buy/Sell/Trade", section.

You should find something to your liking and probably cheaper than you think.

The first burner (a PHR) I built cost me less than $100, but the quality is great and it'll last forever. It's easy to build something very nice, without spending too much money.

If you just want to buy something cheap but with power to get started, look at this.

I don't think you're dealing with the diode there.

Are you sure it is the diode?

The photosensor is also mounted on a chip, and it generally has 6-18 pins.

The diode itself should be in a piece of rectangular metal, and there should be more than one. Keep looking in the sled- there'll be more than one for a DVD burner.
