Yeah, protected or unprotected, I do not leave lithiums charging unattended. I see the green light, and they come out.

When I need to charge batteries late at night I try to stay awake until they are finished

Depending on the layout, the exposed side of your cell may either bypass the switch, short the battery, or operate as normal. When rewrapping, please make sure wrap goes around the "corners" of the cylinder.

Thats not "quite" correct

The cells "body" is negative so even if it does come in contact with the inside of the hosts body it still wont create a short.

Ovbiously, case positive lasers are excluded

Yes, it depends on the layout. For a positive-switched, case-negative build it won't matter, i.e. operate as normal. On a positive-switched, case positive build with a switch in the rear, it can short the battery. For a negative-switched, case-negative build with switch in the rear, it will simply bypass the switch.

I was giving all the scenarios since I don't know what host those cells would be going into. Safety first, esp. when packing this much chemical energy into something that is generally carried around in a pants pocket. If you can find some shrinkwrap that will cover the corners of the cylinder, that would be optimal, and would prevent the above effects.

Yeh, when your dealing when things like these, you must take precautions...

I accidentally let the tab running down the side of the cell touch the body and when it sparked it scared the crap out of me

This is almost what I do.

I wish I had one left to show you guys start to finish, but...

All I do is take a sharp blade to the top & bottom edge and trim it off.
with the blade or a tiny flat head screw driver lift the protection circuit off and the head on some since I don't need the nipple on the pos end, and I use Neodymium magnets in their place to aid connection in some of my builds.

Anyway pry the small flat wires off the battery (Don't short!) then with a pair of pliers pull the wire up the inside of the shrink wrap, and off of the battery leaving the heat shrink on the battery now trim any of the insulation from the wire that runs up the side that might be left, and hit it with some heat. the sleeve should shrink right back on the battery.
Too much heat will crack it and it will peel off if you snag it on something.

this is what i finish with. no cutting down the side needed.
