I am attempting to make a simple spirograph to go with my lasers but I think I may have screwed up. :gun: You see, I have found some motors that I think will work but there's a problem. When I was removing them from the CD player I think I may have broken off too much of the metal piece where I would solder my wire. :oops: I will attach some pictures to show you what I'm talking about. Tell me what ya think.. Will I still be able to solder my wire onto the tiny bit of metal that remains? I sure hope so! Also, does it matter if I switch around the positive and negative? (If you need better pics I can link you to the full quality pictures) Thanks!

You *might* be able to stick a small blob of solder on what's left of that contact and then attach your wire to the blob, but it's a big *might*. Lucky for you those little motors are a dime a dozen.

You will need to "tin" (cover in solder) the remaining piece of metal using a soldering iron before you try and attach a wire...It can be done but you will almost certainly melt the insulator somewhat.
If you switch polarity you reverse the motor so no problem.

Alright, Thanks, Yeah I suppose I wouldn't hurt trying.. Even if I do screw up like you said, there extremely cheap. Haha I guess I'll go fire up the soldering iron! :D

You can also try using the spindle motor, which will spin faster than the tray motor you have there. It's usually a high-speed, 3-phase brushless motor that you can drive with two H-bridge circuits (see how). Also they're usually connected with a ribbon that you can desolder from the board itself, making it easy (easier) to wire up.
