I was hoping to use an old laser housing. I can get other housings though. The laser housing had used watch batteries.

That will not work. You'll need a flashlight host...and a heat sink so the module does not over heat. They sell kits on this forum...just look around. The size battery you will need will depend on the flashlight kit you use. Kits are around $20-$60.

I bought this module from dx 30mW 405nm Blue-Violet/Royal Purple Laser Module (3V) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

I got a housing and what not and should be getting the module tomorrow and I was wondering what to use to power it. It says 3v but not sure if there is a certain kind of battery to use.

You can use 2 AA or 2 AAA batteries in series to give you
the 3VDC that is required for your module. Don't forget to
wear Laser Safety Goggles/Glasses when testing your Laser.

I can see 405nm quite easily... if you want to see it brighter
shine it on a white piece of paper and it will fluoresce.
