it's not just the diodes.... who knows what the max current of the driver is too.? it's best to just play with it on an lpm. Alot of it could also be a placebo effect to. with out an LPM you really have no way AT ALL to know if you turned your 5mw green into a 10 or 15. But if a person thinks they turned it up then more power to them (pun intended)

Please note, i say an lpm is the only way... I say this because most noob pot modders won't have a clue how to check current.

I am suggesting testing and comparing driver current and LPM readings. I am surprised no one has done this yet with how cheap these are. It would be cool to have some data on what current provides the best performance on average using several units to gather the data and make it representative of the general 5mW newwish pool. Then at least its not pot modding instead it would be current optimizing.

In some cases it is not the diode but the crystals that set the limit of a pot mod. If you pump a cheap crystal set too hard it can burn up. Mode hopping would also be an issue.

The point I am trying to make is that it is not really possible to set a limit with cheap greens like it is with regular diodes.

Its more difficult and less accurate than diodes definitely but I dont think we can say at this point that its not possible to find a good current for improved average performance. Unless there is some testing and data on this that I have not seen. I do know what you are saying though and yes it is a much more complex system to work with than a diode.

Well if diode life is the problem...can't you just replace the cheap diode with a better one, like a blu ray diode (or at least one that can handle the higher power)? Is this even compatible?

I have a tutorial i just put up that hopefully people wanting to pot mod will see. You can turn a 5mW green laser into a IR burning laser without adding anything new just removing 1 thing from a laser.

That is not Pot Modding...
That is removing the DPSS crystals from a 532nm Laser...

What if you remove the crystal while smoking a joint? Wouldn't that be pot modding?

It's not safe, by any means. You'll just wreck your eyes instead of your laser.

How is it not safe? I have IR goggles and would assume the same for anyone who tries it.

Well, you need to make that very explicitly clear before posting the tutorial. I've played with IR once and I had a big DIY radiation shield made of cardboard with a small window with my mobile phone celotaped to it so I could see the dot on the screen using the camera.

The other issue is about focus. The lens is set at an appropriate distance for focussing green light at infinity. Infrared will focus differently, and therefore your new laser will have pretty terrible divergence. I don't know... if you've done it already, you probably know better than I do, I just think since IR lasers aren't that much more expensive than green you may as well buy an IR one.

How about adding an eighth of (a) pot? That'll certainly make it seem brighter.
