310 mA @ 350 mW matches my graph. The diodes are getting stable from these drives.
Enjoy the photons......

So we (well... you) are at an average of 350-360mW... Will pushing it over 425mW be a bit over the limit?

If you get further readings please post them here and I'll make some graphs to sum powers up for now (if I include Dave's 512mW beast it'll give a huge boost to the graph :p).

EDIT: If this post is confusing then it's because I need to get some sleep...

Just got my LaserBee LPM yesterday and did some testing of my Pioneer 8x in my Jayrob pocket mini with his glass lens mod. Jay shipped me the pocket mini set at 290ma like I asked. Today I put it on the laserbee and read a very steady 358mw output. Not bad at all really.

Something inside me wanted to see 400mw but oh well. An hour passed so I looked at the poor pocket mini with evil eyes and opened it up again. I installed a 1 ohm resister and increased the current to 360ma. I put it back together and looked squarely at the LaserBee with hopeful eyes. I turned on the 8x and watched the meter climb fast. It soared past 350mw and kept climbing. It slowed at 440mw and came to rest at 451mw steady for 30 seconds. I turned the 8x off remembering it is still only in a small pocket mini with a small heat sink.

451mw in a pocket mini is very acceptable to me. Got to watch those duty cycles and have fun.

Wow! Sounds like a version 4 FlexDrive can handle the BDR 8X at 360mA's! (BDR correct?)

Schweet! :D

Jay, the flexdrive in your pocket mini build isn't maxed out yet. I saw 420ma for a 1/2 second while I was adjusting. it is so sensitive like a woman. As tempting as it was to leave it at 420ma I did not, I immediately backed it down to 360ma and re-assembled for testing on the LaserBee.

The FlexDrive can even do over an Amp...

But with this diode, which has a high forward voltage, 300mA's was thought to be about max per Dr. Lava.

But you have shown that it holds steady with an 8X at 360mA's!

Is your diode a BDR-203?

I am thinking of making my 8x's with flex drives at 400ma. i wonder if it will hold.. up , as long as it doesnt ask for more than 6V it should be ok, per DrLava.

only one way to tell..

Just a quick progress report on my 8x:

The diode is still alive and kicking, but the my (self-built) driver wasn't up to the diode's Vf of slightly over 6V and went into thermal shutdown much too early for my liking :)

Today I put in a new driver (TPS61165). That one should be able to handle the higher Vf with ease. I set the current to 290mA and it puts out 420mW after the 405-G-1 lens.

quantile: How much time (hours/minutes) your laser has operated with the higher power before the defeath of your first driver (approximately)?

The first driver shut down after approx. 10 seconds, because the step-up IC was operating outside its operating parameters of 5.5V maximum Vout. At least that's what I think.

So, my total runtime of the 8x diode was rather short until now, under 15 minutes I guess.

The new driver seems to work ok and doesn't limit the duty cycle in any way, although I like to keep it under one minute for the diode's well-being.

I have my 8x coming tommarow hopefuly :eg: Im praying tonight! lol, but i need to buy a LPM b4 i could contribute. i plan on pushing this diode in a direct press heatsink and running it at Daguins level. Just because im not paying too much for it... lets just say someones dumb.

i wont start at that current right away, I'll go up slowly. but i should have my 405g1 comin in the mail Via Jayrob  it can go on the chart or w/e.

the only thing is, i dont know if its a BDR or that other one. i'll find out tommarow "hopefully as stated above"

I'll post back when its all here. it will be in a kryton 1st run. direct diode mount, option for ANY driver almost. awsome host. if it werent for the direct press diode thing, i'd puut it in a mini.

J you should lathe P Mini heatsinks that have a lens thread, and a direct press deal. could you even do that? if u could im sure it would allow whatever full potential is in that diode to come out right?

I've got the 9mm X .5 Tap for AixiZ, but it won't allow me to tap the threads all the way down like an AixiZ module is. Because the tip of the Tap will bottom out before it could cut the threads properly...

Quite honestly, it sounds like a lot of extra work and tight tolerances for a guy like me, even if I got the correct type of Tap. I think I'll leave that kind of work for the real professionals. Or the CNC machinists.

I Know that the direct press is better, but the set screw style doesn't seem to be too bad really...
