How about the irony of a HD-DVD diode working in a BR drive ;-)

Here is a picture of the PHR in its new home:

LOL, that's awesome that it still works. *Kinda makes sense I guess, but still, that's just cool. *I remember some people getting the PHR diodes from the refurbished/discontinued Toshiba drives back in the day before we could get the sleds, and it was possible to just pluck out the violet diode and it would still keep working for CDs and DVDs, but this brings it to a whole new level! *Kudos to you, sir. *

Yes, exact same pinout. The neutral case pin isn't even soldered on. It's an easy swap, due to the location of the violet diode there is plenty of room to work. I didn't even remove the sled from the drive.

Thanks, I know its a n00bish question, but at 200$ a pop it falls into the 'better safe than sorry' category

So if I've done my homework correctly, there are now three working 8x lasers - Daguin's, Quantile's and now Intro74's?

Default Re: Pioneer 8X Blu-Ray-- BDR-203

Yes! I just got mine built...

But mine is a little lower in efficiency. I believe it is a very nice longer wavelength though!

I have my BDR-203 in a Pocket Mini build set at 292mA's. (FlexDrive) I'm getting 375mW's with the 405-G-1 glass lens.

Still happy with that much power in such a tiny build!

Or, possibly it is the version 3 FlexDrive?? Maybe it is not really getting 292mA's like my test load got... Not sure about that, but it is very stable at 375mW's...

That's unbelievable that intro74 is getting 420mW's at only 255mA's in his Sony build!

Good job!

Just don't try to burn any blu-rays obviously, or you'll smoke that diode!

I think your right Mike, there were a couple of vendors with multiple listings that probably sold out...

Just an update with my Pocket Mini BDR build, I swapped out the version 3 FlexDrive with a version 4 FlexDrive just in case the V3 wasn't keeping up with the higher forward voltage and I got the same results.

So it isn't the driver. It's just that my diode is lesser in efficiency. That's ok, sometimes the ones that are lesser in efficiency, are more durable! (like Igor's first 6X)

Time to put the 8x in a host. It's a C3 stainless steel build (DX sku.11133) with a Dark Horse heatsink for the Aixiz module.

These are the parts:

The PCB of the original flashlight LED driver (with all components removed) was used for the positive battery contact. Negative contact is provided through the body, I had to remove some of the heatsink's anodizing to close the current path.

Here is the driver assembly in the Dark Horse heatsink:

I set the driver to 265mA, getting 307mW out of the Aixiz acryllic lens (still waiting for my 405-G glass lens)

Woha, Quantile, it's a beautiful laser!
Once you'll get the 405G1 lens from JayRob, you'll easily get a Power Output of 380 - 390 mW. With such a power it will be no more necessary to focus exactly the beam for burning matches: I have focused to 10 m. my "poor" IgorT 154mW (with the 405G1) and I have been able to light a match at a distance less than 1 m (at this distance the dot is roughly 2x1 mm large - measured with the safety glasses).

Yeah, Quantile's photography is top notch *8-) What sets his work apart from mine is the damned lighting... it's bloody perfect! I'm guessing soft-box or really good white balance (via manual setting or post-processing).

Looks like erns and I will have to step up to the challange *

@Quantile: I'm working with a 350D/50D & EF-S 60mm. You said you're also an EOS man... I'm guessing you have the EF 100 2.8 with macros like that... *

Jay, I know this 8x mission is a race to the top but personally-speaking, wavelength is more important than top mW, once you cross some reasonable mW threshold *8-) This is particularly true with 405nm wavelengths, which is still a difficult wavelength for my eyes... *:-?

So if you really do have a 410nm+ beauty than do yourself the favor of not pushing it. I'm certain that you will come across more efficient diodes in the future but less certain you will come across such vivid ones as often... *

Speaking of which... *BEAM PICS PLEASE!!! *
