I just dont really understand the above comments. So what Dave has is a SLD3234VF diode (4x sled) rated at 170 mW but Dave put it to 500mW ?

No, I believe he has a SLD3235VF

I was one number off. Sorry for the confusion.
Pulse optical power output : duty 50% or less, pulse width 10ns or less
250mW

Does anyone know how to verify this to be 100% true?

Then after we learn enough from our $300 diodes, someone is able to find them using the information we have provided and we watch everybody else get the sled (QC rejects) for $50 <sigh>

If someone wants to donate the $1,000, I would be happy to dedicate the time and workbench space to do long term current tests on five diodes ;)

Mine has accrued just over 20 minutes burn time at 365mA at this point.  It has never been left on longer than 90 seconds.

I think it could be really difficult to find a 1,000$ donor, while it could be easier for sure to find 20 members donating 50 bucks each. I'll be happy to be one of them (hoping that others will follow, in the interest of the research ;)).

I would also be in for $50 to help out, but as I said before, the whole thing would have to be carefully coordinated to maintain the purity of the experimentation. All heatsinks and drivers must be identical, that way we know for sure that heat and/or voltage transients aren't the reason for any diode's untimely death. Each module should be assembled in the same manner with the same thermal paste, wiring, etc. (this would need to be defined prior to the start of testing). If we start losing diodes to these types of issues, it will taint the results.

All of the diode information that has been posted in the last few postings is from 2007.  I guarantee you that the market and the diodes have changed since then.

It is cool research.  It is just very old in this field.  In 2007 we were still building 20mW PS3's

For example: The SLD3236VF was "under development" in November 2007!

That's two.  Only eighteen more to go ;)

I would be happy to pick up the rest of the supplies (heat sinks, drivers, etc.) and do this.

However, let's see if there are more "subscribers" before I start collecting any money, OK??

Edit: Removed foolish mistake on my part regarding potential for popups. In future, will not read 50 cents as $50!

No popups on LPF. It would really get in the way.

Dave, are you sure you shouldn't just leave it for the other people to find the broken sleds for cheap?

@Rocketparrotlet, I didn't mean on LPF but a second site devoted to study of the 8X. I've edited it out anyway, it's not nearly as much of a financial gain as donations would be.

I would LOVE for that to happen.  Did you find them yet?  j/k  

Usually, by the time we get the QC rejects (if ever -- we don't always) there have been several members take the plunge.  

The suggestion for the tests was not mine.  However, it would be a "first" here.  It would also be VERY nice to have these kinds of tests sooner.  Many people would spend the $200 for the diode **IF** they were reasonably assured that they could safely get >400mW out of the diode.  $200 is a lot of money for many.  However, more would be willing to spend that for this level of violet light.

The choice then would become:  $1200 for a 400mW green or $300 for a 400mW violet that they could build themselves.

This is about helping people to make that decision.  Right now it is a $200 experiment for each person taking the plunge

Whether it happens using a $200-300 diode or a SF-AW210 or 6X or any of them, I only suggested the testing as a guaranteed way to establish good numbers on diodes we don't have datasheets for. Personally, I think everyone here on LPF (whose membership is growing quickly, I might add) could see some benefit to having solid specs (at least compared to what we have here with an 8X now, which is mostly educated guessing with a very limited amount of diodes). The test seems like a great way for the community as a whole to be able to build more reliable lasers. Speaking only for myself here: I like a reliable system if I build it. I like the feeling I get knowing that I'll be getting a lifetime rivaling lasers costing hundreds or even thousands more that are designed by scientists. The only way to feel that confident about reliability is to have and observe solid specs.
