I ordered an Osram pl520 520nm laser diode already pressed into a module with a driver from DTR. And I hooked it up to 8 AA batteries, after 2 seconds it stopped working. I used 2 123 batteries and a very dim spot showed up and that is pretty much it... I talked to DTR for a few days and he told me it was destroyed so I don't know what to do now. My main account is usedwolverine57.

Multiple accounts will get you banned from LPF.

Sounds like you destroyed the diode with the battery stunt.

Next time take the time to learn about how to do what you want to do.

Yep unfortunately the unit is boost driven and the drivers max voltage is 5.5V. The two 123 cells would have done it in and not sure exactly how he had the 8XAA when he tried them but a single Li-ion or a 3-5.5V 1A+ capable power source is what is required for the unit.:(

Yup. That thing is fried then.

Throw it out and start over OP. It's an expensive mistake, but it happens in this hobby. I remember my first dead diode. Was not a happy experience.

Edit: Keep the module and lens. Those are still good.

You gave 12V (I am assuming you just had them in a standard 8xAA battery holder) to something that can only take 5.5V...then to test it afterwords you gave it 6V...Gotta make sure to look at driver specs before just goin' ham with whatever batteries you have laying around. I've killed 2 diodes due to not looking at driver specs...You learn fast. At least you won't make that mistake again :)
