well i just got a dvd burner and found the right diode and just want to see how it looks. i just talked to my neighbor because i wanted to attach alligator pins to the diode and put it to the battery to c if it works. and he said that wont work because of itll just fry the diode. so i thought about it and would adding a resistor to circuit make it less possible for it to fry?i know this is a huge newbie question but im new to lasers and was just curious so i dont fry my diode. thanks for the help =)

Don't bother. You will kill your diode as soon as you plug it in.

Be thankful that you found this forum!!!
You will need a driver to provide the proper amount of current to the diode.
For example, a 16x diode needs about 200mA. If you use a minimag, you could be giving it as much as 1000mA.
That is too much, and you will fry the diode...
