Newbie want advice :)

ok i want to ask you im a newbie im not from usa and sorry if i make mistakes
can i use a laser from one of the following:  (and why not if so)
1 - DVD player
2 - CD-RW

DVD player = useless 5mw red diode.
CD burner = ~80mW max uncollimatable infrared diode, too much hassle to bother with generally.
