So, Just as a background. I've been wanting to get into moding lasers for a while now, but just started having the extra time to do it as a hobby. I've messed around/fixed various electronics before but never specifically with lasers, so I know how to solder, connect circuits and the like., that wont be a problem. And, I've used various types of lasers before (mostly for recreational purposes) so I know how they work mechanical point of view and to handle them responsibly as well.

Down to the project at hand however. I want to build a laser with my own housing so it looks the way I want it to once finished, etc. I have visible and invisible Class lllB laser diodes that are fully functional and quite new extracted from various devices, and I also have an old XBOX that has a functional diode that I mean to extract as well. However these are the only things I have, other than various materials for housing. My question is, what other things would I need exactly other than the obvious tools to complete this project? Also, in what ways can I possibly enhance the power for these lasers with and without shortening the life of the diode? (via different resistors, modules, etc.)

I know these lasers won't be very powerful, that's not the point. This is just the first project I intend to undertake, as I am very interested in the mechanics and practical applications for lasers. Thank you all for your time and assistance.
