ive just looked at what people have said on the Radio Shack site if you are looking at it the way it is in the picture then it is. Input. Output. Adjust

Solder the components onto the board where you want them, post pics of the top and bottom and I will edit the bottom pic with the connections you need

Is there any readings he can take from the legs of the lm317 to verify the pinout?

OK so I just put a DMM to the chip, and there should be a 1KOhm resistance between
the input (right) and output (middle) pins.
At least on mine it is.

Between the other pins, resistance is really high (over 200KOhm anyway)

well I soldered the board together and went to extract the diode, and to my suprise the diode is the weirdest looking thing. There is pretty much no brass on the bottom where the pins are and none around the light part. I was trying to take a pic and its so small I cant get it to focus. I know its the laser because i gave it power and got a semi bright light, brighter than it would have been if it were the IR lens. Dammit, I cant catch a break with this. So now I have a board all soldered up and no laser diode, oh and destroyed a burner in the progress geez. Has anyone ever seen a diode like I explained?

Did it come from a sf-bw512 sled?
If so, that is the red from it, the other diode (the bigger "round" one) is the 405 diode.
Apparently that red is pretty powerful (~300mW) but is a PITA to mount

he bought a Toshiba/Samsung TS-H653 20x DVD±RW DL SATA Drive w/LightScribe drive so i dont think he will know what diode is actually in it :-( Im betting its one of those flat diodes

It came from a toshiba/ samsung 20x dvd burner. there was no other big round one, there was a ribbon with what looks like a diode on it in front of a lens so I guess that was the ir diode

yea it looks like a flat one, that I just seen. It came out of the heat sink also, so I dunno. Looks like trash now. Now I need a diode to match my new driver. What a PITA

Well that sucks, hope it wasn't too expensive.
What is the return policy?

This hobby can cost a LOT if you let it.
I think I am down by almost $1000 between the lasers and some other electronic projects I have started since august.
That isn't including tools either :(

I am learning that. I have already spent atleast double on parts to build my driver that i would hav cost me to just order one. But I want to learn as much as I can about he whole system 1st before just buying one. I want to be as educated as I can be about the lasers, rather than just plugging one together.
