Module size and Heatsink

Alright. First off I wanted to ask what is the most commonly used size for your average laser module.
Secondly. What size drill bit would be the best size to use on a heatsink to make said module fit snuggly in there?

Most common size is 12mm but the diameter can between 11.8 to 12.0mm due sloppy Chinese manufacturers. If you can get a drillbit of 11.8mm and you can always make the hole larger by pushing the bit against the hole. For easier mount get a drillbit of 12mm.

An Aixiz module is pretty much the standard around here. They are 12mm in dia... So if you are going for a pressfit type grab a 15/32 inch drill bit, but if you want to use a setscrew and be able to remove the module a standard 12mm drill bit will do the trick.

I take it hypothetically of course. Instead of using a set screw a nice thin coat of arctic silver 5 would do?

That's just thermal compound. You would need thermal adhesive. I'm not too sure about the arctic silver range, so I might be wrong.

Personally I would take metal on metal with pressure. That is always better than a thin layer thermal compound in between without pressure. And it is messy working with paste.

Personally, when I do a module press-fit into the sink, I turn the Aixiz module on the lathe to remove the chrome plating.
Then I bore the sink to the OD of the turned module.
This makes raw brass in direct contact to the sink for optimal thermal efficiency.
I realize that most members do not have a lathe, but I figured I'd give my .02.
