Default making first laser help

Iím from Australia and as you may know the import of lasers is being banned so Iíve decided to make one.
Iím new to all this but do have some skill with electronics.
I donít want to import anything if possible because it may be confiscated.
I want the laser I make to be as powerful as possible, I want to be able to burn things with it.
I want the laser to be portable I have a flashlight casing that I want to install it in.
Iím planing on using the laser diode form an 16x DVD burner.
With all this in mind I have a few questions:
1. Do I need an Aixis module?
2. If a LDD wonít fit into my flashlight case would simply soldering a resistor to the laser diode work or is this not advisable.

Ill check here for answers and post any more questions I think of.
Thanks
neco

1) You don't NEED to use an aixis module. If you have a lathe you could turn your own holder, or you could get someone to make one for you. Bare in mind that you will need a lense of some kind - The Aixis modules come with a lense, so it would probably make life much easier to just get a pre-made module like the Aixis module.
2) It would work, however it is not advisable in the slightist. It will probably end up in the premature death of your laser diode. See this thread to see how small regulators can be made, assuming you can use surface mount components:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/fo...num=1211316252

I think there's some petition in someone's signature to stop that ban. I don't really believe in petitions but you might be interested in finding it.

Off topic: Yay, I can post links now.

Yes you do need an aixiz module, it serves for heatsinking the diode and for collimation.

If you can't fit a driver in your flashlight then at least use a resistor and a capacitor. You can always buy a driver if DDL's doesn't fit. This driver is very similar to a DDL driver, the only difference is that it starts dropping out at a lower voltage. This one is a boost driver as well as a regulator, you can save a lot of battery space by using it.

Exactly, I don't see why you would want to go through all the trouble of making your own module when you can buy the aixiz here for 6 bucks.

i pulled a cheep <1mw laser apart and it has a housing inside, it has a lense but the housing is made of plastic.
this would be of no use wouldnt it because it wouldnt work as a heat sink?

Nope, you can't use that, just get an Aixiz module from one of the links nvmextc posted.

What country do you live in? This may be cheaper because it has free shipping to anywhere in the world.

Free, but SLOW shipping For less than $1.50 more, I ship around the world {Free, too} - a lot faster than they do, and no annoying little low powered diodes to punch out, either

yeh one thing though is that im getting a bit worried about getting stuff shipped here (australia) because of the new laws... they are trying to stop people even owning a powrfull laser.

As long as people can solder AND use the internet, people in Australia will have powerful lasers.

Peace,

There is nothing illegal about components. The diodes I send out are NOT complete units, and therefor do not violate any laws, of any country. If the package weight is over 3 ounces, I fill out customs paperwork, and list everything as electronic components (Not a lie at all !) and they sail right through customs every time. Several major laser companies (Wicked, Nova, Dragon, Optotronics, Laserglow, etc) all ship to Australia with no issues at all - and most even have guarantees that state if your stuffs get confiscated, they will re-ship !

I appreciate your nervousness regarding the new laws, but in all honesty - relax a tiny bit, and order what you want from wherever you want - it'll get there just fine :-)
