Wax only burns when liquid, so you have to melt it before. Vaseline is a better choice because it ignites quicker and is water repelent.

I've always used the Vaseline/cotton ball method and a pile of Birch bark as a good ignitable source when it was damp. Obviously if its pouring you are out of luck no matter what you use.

Re: ACTULY lighting 3 floating fires 50 yds away

Dude tone down the ego a couple of notches will ya? Your idea is noted. The more ideas the better in this situation, so don't take it personal that others want to contribute their ideas too. Between all of us I'm sure we can come up with a solution that will fit his needs. And no, I don't drive my car everyday.

sorry but I disagree with your idea of more ideas are better, maby if all the ideas came from people who knew what they talk about that would be true.
but it is totaly obvious that most of the people offering ideas here have never tryed to pull off any thing like what they are giving advice on, on the other hand I have done this type of thing many times hundreds in fact. and just to let you know it is possible to start a fire in the rain. I have launched many a pyrotechnic device while it is raining, I have been a licenced professional pyrotechnican since 1991 and have recieved many a paycheck for my work as such. how many people giving advice to this man here can say that ! when your playing with fire it helps to know what your talking about if you don't want to get burned !
Tech_junkie nothing personal I was just making a point we all drive cars !
you did make a nice campfire on the screen though I'll give you points for that. with that said I'll say maby it's not my ego but my experence that is talking here, heck if your foot hurts do you go see a plummer, I think not so when myself a licenced pyro gives a man a perfectly good solution for his requirment and then I watch other people suggest things that they have probley never even tryed, well heck you can see where I'm going with this.
if any one wants to learn pyrotechnic ideas and techniques they should look up there local pyro clubs that are supported by the PGI Pyrotechnics Guild International. the PGI has a web site and so dose the WPA Western Pyrotechnic Assoociation there are many clubs in many states, not all states but many, here in Oregon we have the Oregon Sky Jewlers club and it meets twice a month we discuss the pyro laws, how we make pyro devices like mines, commets, star shells, salutes, gerbs, strobes, rockets, whistles, all maner of devices.
this is what I suggest people do if they are interested in pyro, belive me I burned my fingers several times when I was starting out when I was young, I wish I had only known about the PGI & the WPA back then.

^ Well, i'm sorry, i'm no part of any guild, nor pyrotechnic club.

My first-hand experience come just from military service (courses / training as demolition / bomb dismantling / explosives making, and for the fun, sniping :D), and from something like 34 years of self-building fireworks (yes, i started to play with fireworks when i was 13, with a single finger burned from an accident).

Same, not just me, but also a lot of other peoples here can have my same, or also better, experiences in this field, and nor i nor you can know that, right ?

So, don't misunderstand me please, cause i'm not trying to say that you know less than other peoples, and i don't want to offend you, nor any other here ..... i'm just saying you to try to considerate that, maybe, also peoples that don't work in the pyrotechnic industry and don't have certifications, can have enough experience for know what they are saying, you don't think ?

Peace ? .....

Since cost seems to be a factor... and scouts are readily available....

Do the Boy Scouts in that troop have access to more that one boat...

If so... just prepare the three Campfires to ignite easily using any of the suggestions
above or even BBQ starter briquettes....

Then get the 3 boats near the 3 campfires and manually start the fires... one person
per fire... when a signal (flashlight...air horn etc) is sent to the 3 boats from shore..

It's not perfect... but it is cheap... and no possible mechanical/electrical/electronic
failures

So you are saying that everyone's opinion is crap and we should all bow to your way because you are the only one on this thread who knows what he is talking about?

Must be nice to stand on such a high pedestal LOL. :worthy:

Sorry but I see about 4 cool ideas here that will all work. Maybe if we were talking about a professional show your opinion would be valid. But we are talking about some camp fires on rafts LOL. And once again your opinion is noted. No need to keep repeating yourself and shoving your opinion down everyone's throat. It's getting kind of rude.

I'm sure your next move is to bombard him with PM's that you are the only one he should be listening too.

Hey..nothing personal though....

No I think it was you who said everones opinion is crap not me, and I have never PM'd him and don't plan on it if he want's my help he will ask, it sure is strange how you can put words in other peoples mouthes that you haved no idea about, I certnly would not bring myself down to that level, it just simply is not nessary. so you are the professional you tell him how and I'll sit back and just watch....

I agree 100% there are some people out there that have a enept ability to do just about anything, you seem like one of these people when it comes to pyro as you gave some of the better answers IMO. all I was trying to convey is that many of the answers given were just pie in the sky, never had a chance of working in a million years, you say you learned your stuff in the military well did you ever see them set off any thing with a "light beam" did they not always run a wire to the explosive. they are only now using radio devices to set off charges. this event may have been for the boy scouts but it is for a serious thing not just for some fun so I'm sure they would like it to work like they expect.

Have a nice day ! Pyro... :eg:

now your being insulting

No need to keep repeating yourself and shoving your opinion down everyone's throat. It's getting kind of rude.

If any one is being rude here I think it's you with statments like this, I don't go around telling you when to shut up, maby someone needs to though !!!

Re: ACTULY lighting 3 floating fires 50 yds away

No I think it was you who said everones opinion is crap not me,

Please quote that for me because I dont see where I said that.
Didn't I say I see at least 4 good ideas? I also never put words in your mouth. I said "I'm sure your next move is". That's an assumption, not putting words in your mouth. Did you even read my post? I never said I was a professional, nor that my idea was the best one to use. Now you are putting words in my mouth. In fact I said if this was a major event your opinion would be valued over others. This project isn't a competition between me and you. You are so blinded by your ego you are hallucinating.

Chill out and stop being so defensive. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, just like you are. Even if you think they are wrong.

I never said shut up, only that you keep repeaing yourself. And dont tripple post. Thats what the EDIT button is for.

Now back on topic...
