Lighting a floating campfire 50 yards away

Take off and nuke the entire site from orbit... its the only way to be sure.

seriously though i would probably go for the kayak method simple, effective and environmentally sound.

Here's what you could try : a simple cheap alarm clock, opened up, and you can hack the alaRm so that it triggers a 3v relay, that siwitches on a 9v battery + steel wool with match heads. The alarm clock is on a separate raft, close to the fires, limiting the amout of wires. Three simple two braid wires connected in parallel conducts the + and -. Water shouldn't be a problem if the raft is quite high. And even if the wires soak in the water, if they are coated with plastic, they'll be alright. PM me for a "hack an alarm clock" how-to.

A better time fuse sometime used by pyros is a cigarette, with two match head held on either sides of it, in the middle, using a rubber band, and then rapping it in paper. Should work good.

That's the way I'd go... (the KISS principle)

If the 120 feet range of that system is calculated for daytime use then
at night the range would be greater...

The other solution to use this (120' range) IR Igniter system is to bring
the Floating campfires closer to shore...

OR

Put the " Fire Igniter Person" in a boat 30'-50' off shore.... closer to the
floating campfires..

Only one problem...

Not "nececelery" if you put the controllers on a small floating platform... I'm sure the controller
must have some wire coming out going to the Firework Fuse...

Just extend those wires from the small floating platform to the Campfire Raft..

well I could say I've done this sort of thing for years, or I'm a licensed pyrotech, or I'm older so listen to ME, but I won't do that, insted I'll just say try this one !
contact Seminol wire and get a 500 foot roll of 22 gage shoot wire about $21.00. contact Pyro-Pac in Al. and buy some electric matches there about $1.50 ea in small quantiy. get some road flairs. remove the safety/striker cap from the road flair and tape an electric match to the black ingnition button on the end of the flair put the safety cap back on will help keep the water off.being a scout master you know how to build a good fire with kindling just put the flair at the bottom so it will light your fire. you run the wire from raft to raft to raft to shore connect all the rafts in series that way all or none light. on shore connect a 12 volt battery and a push button switch in series with the wire from the rafts. when it comes time to light the fires have three people with any color laser train the lasers on the rafts that will be the button man's que to push the button. it will be dark only the people with the lasers will be seen wala fire by laser... no oil or fuel is needed if you know how to build a fire shouldn't need any, so the fishes will be happy ! if you think more fuel might be needed try using melted wax you can coat some of the wood before it's even put on the raft and it should not mess up the water.

O yea I think maby it's the back yard pyros that use cigarets and matches for time fuses, as I consider myself a true pyro and in a professional role I have never done that !!! there are real time delay devices if you realy want something to work. cigarets and matches kids stuff !!!

Heheheh ..... sorry, but this part was too funny.

But, i'm sure you know, not just kids uses matches, wax and other common things ..... also "professionals" that need to not let tracks ..... :eg:

I still have some electrical igniters for rocket ingines that only need a 9V battery. If i remeber well, those were 4$ for 15. They come from a local hobby store. These are good.

Wire, electric matches, 12V battery, switches, flairs = Large amount of time and expense for a scouting group.

Cigg, match, maybe some Vaseline on a cotton ball = under 1$ for the same effect in 30 seconds of prep.

Oh yeah..the scouts...are kids.
