Default Lasers extract from laptop DVD burner

I disassembled an old laptop's dvd writer.

I extracted two different laser diodes.
First one seems a normal laser diode.

But second one is a little larger and has a circuit on it.

Anyone knows which diode is the burner ?
How do i drive the second laser diode with a circuit on it?

Normal shaped one is the burner, the rectangular one is the IR LD. You'll need a module and a host, or other heatsink for the std one. Dont run the diode without at least a module and I'd recommend (althogh this does depend in the diode) a max of 350 mA - 380 mA. ie 1 AMC7135 chip

Here's a similar build I made with a DVD burner diode:

DIY - The little red key chain...that lives!!*PIC HEAVY*

Good luck

Actually I believe the large, 12-pin one is the red diode, and unfortunately, unusable.

You'll need to find drives that have both diodes in 5.6mm package, like the first diode you posted. Sorry

Alternatively you can grab some diodes off DTR's shop:

@crazyspaz, dude I don't mean to sound rude, but jeez. Either answer the question, or don't. Yes there are tons of threads on it, and majority of those tons of threads with legitimate questions end with "Just search for it", ironically making it impossible to search for it. Don't obfuscate knowledge.

I guess it depends on the model of the drive. All the large rectangular ones Ive had in the past were comb red/IR reader diodes and the small 5.6 (or 3.8 mm can ones if from a laptop burner) were the red burners.

Edit: IRRC there are also combination red/IR 5.6 or 3.8 mm diodes in some drives.

That is true but the fact that the other diode is a short can type isn't giving much hope.

Well there's one way to know for sure: the tint of the reflection off the window of the small diode.
Greenish reflection - IR.
Bluish reflection - Red.

it's OK for people to have some common sense and be able to use google. Seeing tons of "what is this diode" and "is this laser legit" type threads gets real annoying.

LPF isn't a daycare, we are big boys and girls; and big boys and girls are expected to have at least a smidge of sense

One of the misconceptions we have here is that these sorts of threads can be stopped from happening, that we can make the information available and condensed enough that nobody needs to ask duplicate questions.

I personally believe that to be quite false, since we're dealing with a highly specific, technical area of optics and electronics that is our hobby. I have "spoonfed" and "daycared" people, and will continue to do so, because I believe this is the only way of combating this kind of threads, and to spread a positive image of this community.

At the end of the day, you either helped somebody, or didn't. I choose to help.

Fair points. I suppose I have long since tired of spoonfeeding, and have since changed to just saying "learn how to google, you doofus." Very true though that these threads will never stop, as telling people to use google may work...but other people will still make threads and will STILL not learn how to use google.
