Laser mechanic wanted!!!!!

If this whole repairs forum is going to take off we'll need someone who will do the repairs here (a bit like Gageteer from way back on the LC). Obviously this person or persons will do these tasks for a fee and shipping on top.
Just my thought out loud here so it's all up to you guys if you want to take this on and make yourself some money ;)

Eh, what type of repairs are we talking? I gotta say, repairing DPSS lasers isn't really... practical. I remember back when JD used to do it, he was often doing very poor repair jobs (IE, a repair on a dead 125mW would yield 60mW on a good day), charging prices high enough to make people complain about the work, and still barely making anything - definitely making far less than he deserved. By the end, he was at a point of just not accepting any more returns.

Perhaps with red lasers and the like - things easier to work with. When it comes to dead DPSS greenies though, you're normally better off just buying a new one. I hope the help/repairs section doesn't give people the wrong idea that fixing and modifying their green laser is an easy task to be taken lightly.

This is certainly something to take into consideration. But I know many of us would be mroe then qualified to replace diodes for those who are less then comfortable doing it themselves.

Really? I didn't know there was a single person on the forums qualified to replace the diode of a DPSS laser and still get it working up to its old spec.

Oh my bad, I was referring to replacing red diodes in modules and fixing up people's DIY lasers. :D
Yeah with DPSS I wouldn't even TOUCH one of those.

Now now boys :D DPSS is another story of coarse but I'm sure someone will need to have repairs or construction done on homemade lasers and this what this thread is all about ;)

Ah. In that case I nominate SenKat. Lets bog that guy down with even more laser work! (Plus he'd be in a good position to replace red diodes)

I can fix dpss lasers but no guarantees on power output or time for turn around. I can make sure it's in mode 0 with a beam analyzer but that's about all I could guarantee. I'm a busy guy...

That said it really depends on WHAT is wrong/broken. It's really luck of the draw, you might get more or less, or if you really screwed up and say cracked a crystal in half or split a optical contact, you might never get them fixed, as parts may be imposible or cost prohibitive to get.

DPSS alignment is a very time consuming task The diffrence a slight rotation or a tilt or shim or anything can make you go from 30 mw to 300mw with fractions of a mm, and then you still have to get mode 0. It's HARD. And even if you get a nice clean beam and within the correct power output, it most likely will not be centered or straight. It's very very hard to do to make it all come together.

Pseudo --

Hey -- I've replaced several pump diodes on DPSS greens and a couple actually worked !!  sorta....

I agree -- It's not worth the time unless you are just looking for knowledge - and that's a good thing but not for profit.

Yes SenKat is going to have some time during his recoup period ;D :D ;D

I've repaired a few higher end 3W melles griot green and 500mW blue DPSS lasers to or better than original spec for personal use, but it's a pain in the rear to do it. Often it's hard to find the right diode for it. If a crystal's shot than you're SOL :'(

Assuming it's a dead diode, it takes hours of trial and error, requiring judicious use of a jeweler's file, exacto blades, shims, and other creative tooling to make the laser diode fit properly. THEN, one must find a sweet spot on the crystal, if it lases multimode you risk blowing up the yvo! Then you need to carefully tweak the alignment while it's on. One mistake and it's FUBARED!

As for pointers and cheaper chinamatic modules forget it, not worth the work!
