Laser goes in host, what holds it in place?

Hi Guys,
I bought 2x this host http://dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1442

And I plan on putting a 405nm laser in one. But I was thinking, if I remove the reflector and LED, and carve out where the LED was, and stick the module in there with some glue (which is how you guys do it right?), what holds the other end of the module? The lense is either plastic or glass, so I can't make a hole in that to hold the other side. So besides a custom heatsync, how do you hold it in the host?

Please refer to my mspaint diagram

Maybe make a schematic and send it to Jayrob? But of coarse that might cost a pretty penny to have 100% completely custom. :-/ Maybe you should save your hosts as a flash light and buy another? I mean, we all need at least a 5W flash light too right?

Anyway, another way ppl do it is using washers with the correct ID and OD and stack them up/glue them together.

it would be best to send one of the hosts to jay and let him get a good custom fit. this would reduce the chance of it not fitting.

but it looks like it may be pretty straight forward

I can see from the DX pictures, that this host would make a great laser mod. The heatsink would have to be similar to my two side button heatsinks, in that the outer edges of the heatsink (at the bottom), would sit on top of the aluminum driver mount, with room under the heatsink for the driver and wires... and the top cap would then just screw on. Holding the heatsink tight when the cap is screwed down into place.

Example:

But, as sk8 said, I would need the host. Because this is a very precision fit. I have to make sure of the length of the heatsink as well, so that the cap will screw down tight onto it.

I would sell these heatsinks for the same as my others of this style (with the extra drilling at the bottom cavity) - $25 plus shipping.

For this first one though, it will cost you extra in shipping because I need the host. Then, shipping back will be a little extra because of the weight of the host. Not much though. Probably $5 bucks to ship it back.

Anyway, PM me if you want to do it!

Hmm,
That sounds good. I think I will do my best with washers and stuff, and if I can't get something working then I guess i'll spring for two of these bad boys.

Thanks :)

any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Take a close look at this tutorial:

Your host is very similar in design, only smaller. Because the head must screw on last, the washer method will be difficult (wires will get twisted), unless you somehow design it so that the driver and everything is mounted into the head, and have a battery contact that will make the connection to the supply when the head is screwed down into place.

It will not have much room. I recommend the heatsink, and the flat mounted FlexDrive. Check out this other example of a similar design: (scroll down to the heatsink and driver mount pictures)
