I now have a portable red laser 
Inside are 2x fully charged 14500's, LM317+3Ohms, On/Off button; long heatsink by Mohrenberg, thermal paste around Aixiz, teflon tape on the 650nm glass lens.

I tried a new LD1117 with the 3 Ohm too, it works just as expected and putting out CC. I tried with diff loads, at this point my 2x10440 pack was putting out only 6.6V - LM317 just gave out on the 4 diode load. I would still be able to put 360mA through 4 diodes and 380mA through less with the 1117. So I think the original driver was messed up, misswired, all done by me... I will check it next time, I'm too happy about the big box with a laser:tinfoil:
