Hello,

I need an IR laser for my NOD setup and since they are quite expensive, I want to try building it myself.
I've done some research but I still have some questions.

What I need :
- Something as reliable as possible, so decent quality components
- 850nm eye safe
- Smallest size possible (1xCR123)
- Waterproof (well more like weatherproof, but the more the better)

I've found several hosts on odicforce or ebay but every time it says "for green laser module" "for red laser module" ... Is there a difference ?
They are also too big for my project

Is this a good quality IR module ? Aixiz 850nm 5mW 3.2V with adjustable lens
850nm 5mW Laser Module 3 2VDC W ADJ Lens 850nm | eBay
I'm gessing 5mW is safe for outdoors, what about indoor ?

Thanks :yh:

Buy just about any cheap 532nm green laser pointer and remove the KTP crystal from it to turn the laser into a 808nm laser light source. Although it won't focus to as tight a beam anymore without further modification, that probably isn't what you need for a IR light source anyway. Without the KTP crystal inside, this one will put out over 200 mw of IR light:

Not enough power? Find a higher power output 532nm laser and remove the KTP crystal, but I don't know which ones lend for easy modification except the lower power one I just linked to, above.

Here's a link to one I modified:

Any of the so-called eye safe lasers at longer wavelengths are just less of a hazard in different ways, but certainly not completely "safe" so don't think they are. Enough energy in a tight spot at any wavelength whether coherent or not can still burn. Just that some of the longer wavelengths will burn your cornea first instead of the retina first, either way a problem if not handled safely.

If you want to find a cheap IR LED light source, just search ebay, there are lots of them and probably better suited for your needs than modifying a 532nm laser pointer.

The first one you linked is too big and already way too powerful IMO.
I already have a LED light for illumination, I need a laser for designation.

What do you mean by eye safe?

Well basically something that won't ruin my eyes if it bounces off a reflective surface or something.
For example here's the streamlight tlr2 IR (vis LED/ IR laser combo). The IR laser is 0.8 mW and considered "eye safe"
Amazon.com: Streamlight TLR-2 IR Eye Safe LED Flashlight with Lithium Battery: Sports & Outdoors
The output is really low compared to what I've seen here (but the price is really high :D )

We just stepped out of my wheelhouse :) but now that we know what you're looking for someone should be able to help you out. I've been using 808nm lasers for long range illumination but with high divergence.

If you want a IR laser with a tight beam like a normal visible laser has with a mRad of under 3.0 you might find one on ebay, but the ones I've seen lately are far higher power than 200mw, as you might get by modifying a 532nm DPSS pointer I gave the link to. What output power is just right for your needs?
