infrared laser diode on cd rom

hey guys!..does anybody in here knows how to get the ir laser diode from a cd rom??can you give me some steps to follow.. :).. also,,after taking it from the cd rom,,how can i test the ir laser?? i mean,,where should i place or connect it??how many volts supply do i need...??..thank you!!

Hi, welcome to the forum!

you should probably start by reading all the 'stickies' and tutorials. There is alot of information on this site but you will have to do alot of reading to find your answers...:)

FYI, i'm pretty sure that the diode from a cd-rom will be very weak and not suitable for burning. What is your intended use for the diode?

thank you for the welcome! :) anyway, im not going to use it for burning..my plan is to place it in a projector then see on a camcorder if it can create a figure..box like figure for example..

the one at the cd rom, is it really an infrared laser diode??..

tnx for the advice..guess i should start reading now..

yeah, it's an infrared diode, but unless its a CD-RW high speed writer it won't be any powerful. You must use a driver to power it, however I don't know what current would be appropiate for that diode, we only touch DVD/Blu-ray diodes here, but anyway I'm sure someone will tell you, be patient ;)

I've used many of those, and a cd-rom LD will be pointless. I hooked up alot of them for tests, running at 150-350ma, but either way-it is pointless (they just gives off a dim red glow to the naked eye), unless it is a high power IR LD.

ok..so that's the reason why ir laser from cd rom needs to have a collimating lens for the light to be straight, is it right?
how did you remove the diode from the cd rom?

1.-Open the drive
2.-Find the diode
3.-Take it out

Not that hard eh? ;)

yeah!tnx!..but i need a detailed one..you know, this laser thing is quite new to me (i mean the technical part of it)..im a student..doing some design stuff related to ir laser..actually a already bought one ir laser diode..but unfortunately, it didnt work..and worst, guessed it was damaged due to wrong connections..so my option now is to use the ir laser diode from cd rom..ive been reading some info from this site..but things are still blurred for me..so i really really need help..
is the pin connection of the diode from dvd is just the same with the diode from the cd rom?.coz i saw only the conncetion for the diode from dvd rom so im not sure if it is ok if i will follow it..

I don't know how the connection pins on IR lasers work. To take out the diode there are no instructions, every drive is different, but generally it's like I posted, just find the diode inside and take it out ;)

anyway i was able to find some steps here for dvd rom..maybe it could help me..
my next problem is this..i have a theory..the scenario goes like this..i am projecting a video on the wall using lcd projector..then i have ir laser..i will point it to the projected video and move the laser as fast as i can to form a box like figure that will cover the video on the wall..using my camera,,can i still see the video on the wall or i will see the box like figure of ir laser instead?

Dude it sounds to me like whatever you are doing isn't worth your time. :wtf: I really have no clue what you are talking about doing though, I thought i understood at first, but now i am clueless.

well, depending on the strength of the IR laser, the brightness of the projected video, who knows, you will see a combination of both things I guess.

But what are you trying to do?

It sounds to me like if the guy was trying to avoid someone else to record a projection? Antipiracy system? If that's the purpose, keep in mind that a simple IR filter will let the recorder record it again ;)
