Default HP 6L Laserjet Printer Diode

Hi everyone,
First of all let me say I have searched the forum for a post that may guide me in this and have found nothing. I have also searched google for a possible part number or some type of information to the type of LD this printer has and how powerful it may be and have been unable to find any information.

Now for the "meat" of the subject.

I have an HP 6L Laserjet printer. Well I mean "had" an HP 6L Laserjet printer. *;D
I shredded it for the diode. hehe
It's all good though the printer wasn't working anyways and I have 5 more of em in the basement. *(So I guess you could say I still "have" an HP 6L Laserjet printer ... just not this one ! *

Anyways now I have an LD sitting in front of me and I am not quite sure what steps I need to take next or if the LD is even worth attempting to use. It appears to have the driver board attached to it but I don't have enough experience with this to make an accurate analysis. I cannot post a photo of the assembly I have in front of me due to not having enough posts so I will attempt to make my description as accurate as possible. *

The diode appears to be in a plastic casing, I see the 3 pins coming off the bottom of the casing and they are soldered to a circuit board. The LD appears to be rather larger than what I was expecting. I would say the LD is about a 1/2 inch diameter. If I had a way to describe the plastic casing it would look something like this from a side view :

* * * ||
===||=

About 1 1/2 inches in width, about 1 inch in height and about 1/2 inch thick.

The circuit board sits on the bottom of the plastic casing and is about 1 1/2 inch in length and 1/2 inch wide. It has a data ribbon that comes off of it and is attached to another circuit board which is aprox 4 inches in length and 1 inch in width. This 2nd circuit board has a pin assembly and appears as though you can plug a data/power cable into it. *

My question is this. Should I disassemble the LD from the circuit boards or can I use the 2nd boards connector to power the LD? I don't believe I can simply cut the cable from the 1st board that leads to the second without rendering the board(s) unusable. What type of laser is this? Red, blue, yellow, green, pink, chartreuse .... ok ok i'm just being silly now ( gotta keep the mood light ... yes pun intended.) Does anyone have any experience with these Laserjet diodes that may be able to give me some more information on it before I begin to experiment with it.

Thank you for reading thru all my silliness and putting up with my lack of knowledge, it is truly appreciated. Oh and if anymore information is needed, please let me know and I will do what I can to provide it. Thanx again !!

Electronjunkie

P.S. I hope the was the correct place to post this question. If not I apologize.

I was actually curious myself about using laser printer diodes.
Problem is that all the info I found indicated that most if not all
laser printers use an IR diode. This means you will not actually
get a visible beam out of the diode. Just a dim red glow from the
LED part. If you connect it to a power source be extra carefull.
You won't be able to see the laser but it can still seriously mess up
your eyes. Hopefully someone else here will have a little more info.

Very old laser printers did use He-Ne lasers, today's desktop ones do not
