I'm not certain, but one thing you should do is work out how those traces connect to the coils, from there I think it's about having a driver capable of providing a voltage quickly (he uses an audio amplifier)- all you'd need to do from there is connect the output from the amp to the correct pins on that connector, attach a mirror to the hard disc arm, then balance it.

im actually building one of these right now and all you have to do is find the right traces like charlie bruce said and with the polarity one way it will pull to one side and when you flip polarity it goes the other way. yes you can use and audio amplifier as an input but im going to use some circuitry to vary the frequency so you can play around with it like a spirograph and also have the option to input music and other things like oh say a KEYBOARD maybe hmm... think about it...

o yeah and try two good triple a's to find the right contacts you should be able to trace them just by looking at the ribbon strip and guessing or there should be wires soldered to the ribbon strip right on the arm and thats an easy way to find them

and make sure you get a torx bit set or what you might call the "star screws" i picked up a good set at murrays near my house. your going to need them to just isolate your hdd arm for good experimentation
