how do i check if diode works?

i have 2 dvd 16x dvd burners right now

i haven't taken it apart yet but i realize the drive does not work [like for reading cd and dvds]

one doesnt read dvds for some reason but reads cds

one roars like crazy but doesn't read the dvd in the end, like i wait a while, i click my dvd drive icon on my computer, freezes, then it goes in, has nothing inside

but for the roaring one, when i look inside through the cd tray, i can see a red light inside

so anyways i was wondering if i took one of them apart

how would i check if the diode works cause i have no driver atm or anything if i took it apart

I think some multi-meters have a "diode tester" feature.

I have one it doesn't have that function I think some radioshack one's do or somthing.

It proberly doesn't read dvd's cause there erm broken dvds? ;D

The Diode checker on DMMs are for checking Small Signal Diodes and Rectifier
Diodes... it is not used for checking Laser Diodes.... IIRC... 8-)

Oh-ok I got that information from another thread so that thread must be not right... :(

Re: how do i check if diode works?

so do you think the diode is still good or not

and once again for the roaring one, i see a red light inside when i peek through the cd tray does it mean its still good =[

Re: how do i check if diode works?

Um, why don't you just wait until you have a driver and you've taken apart the drive before asking us if the diode is working? If you don't even have direct access to the diode, nor the means to meaningfully test it, what is the point?

It will give you an idea though, if you get all zeros testing in both directions it is a dud, if you get a reading one way there is hope.

Agreed :)

Re: how do i check if diode works?

Agree with Rog. I tested my 18x red diode using the diode testing ability on the DMM. Usually on that setting, it will either indicate "1", which means infinite resistance, or a number, which is in ohms. (Some may use "OL" instead, which stands for open loop)

Anyway, testing one way gave me like 100+ ohms or something, while the other way gave me nothing. So I soldered it and tested, and it worked! DMM's diode test does give an indicator for the diode's polarity and whether it works. Diodes usually fail closed btw, which means u'd be getting 0 ohms with a failed diode.

[edit]Woops, better correct myself. DMM's diode test does give an indicator for the diode's polarity and whether it doesn't work. If it's a short, then you'd know for sure it's dead.[/edit]

Re: how do i check if diode works?

A diode test is not going to help with a laser diode anyway, since they still act like diodes when burned out; they just have a catastrophically damaged resonator cavity. It is good for knowing what to hook up where though.

Re: how do i check if diode works?

could i connect the diode to a 3v battery directly?

No

You can, but it might not be a good idea. You may blow your diode, but you can do it :P

Re: how do i check if diode works?

lawl ok, i dun know which dvd player to decide from which one to use

when i take a peak inside the roaring dvd drive, i see a red light, does that mean the diode is still

and my one that reads only cds, i think the dvd diode is dead or something

Re: how do i check if diode works?

im about to put together my driver board, i was just wondering

i recently bought a multimeter also

how would i test if the board is proper before connecting it to the diode

You will need a "Test Load" to adjust your Laser driver....

By your question I can see that you will need to do some reading... *::)

Use the Search button and read the Stickies to find information on building or buying
a Test Load and how to use it with your Multimeter to adjust your Driver's output.... 8-)

The information is there.... :)
