okay here is a host that i would LOVE to use for my first build. i haven't seen this used in any other build or anybody make a laser out of it yet so i want to and i really like it.
DealExtreme: $14.20 SmallSun ZY-A4 Convex Lens Cree Q3-WC LED 3-Mode 130LM Flashlight with Clip + Strap (1*18650)

i have a few questions though.
what all needs to be determined once i order and receive this flashlight to see if i can make it a host? i realize if it is able to be transformed into a laser that i would need a heatsink special made for it from someone like Mohrenberg or somebody else that could custom make me a heatsink.

what else entails transforming it into a laser though? i have never made my own build and i want to start learning, i have a driver and phr diode that i am experimenting with and trying to solder just to make into a little box laser just to try to get soldering diodes and wires and drivers and what not down

but what else would i need to do to make this into my laseR? im thinking a 300mW red if at all possible.

a flexdrive or micro boost cause the flashlight uses 1* 18650
and u can contact ehgemus for heatsink .. or moh if he can or flamingpyro (dont know anyone else)
oh wait jayrob might too

Jayrob is pretty much your main man for heatsinks, flamingpyro does them aswell,
you can get custom made Hosts made from Ehgemus.

For the 300mW red laser, you will want an LOC diode, maybe an LCC if you cant get a LOC.
you will need to get yourself an aixiz module and new driver, because you are using a single 18650,you will need a boost driver like the flex drive to run your diode.

You should have a module (aixiz)

300mW is getting a bit high for the acrylic lens that comes with the aixiz module though, aixis also carries glass lenses, make sure it is coated for red/infrared as opposed to 405/455nm (violet/blue) or uncoated.

Should have the driver that can fit in your host and/or heatsink.

This one is a little less expensive and will still fit within the range you are looking for (assuming you are using a lithium-ion batt)
You will need to make sure that the host will properly hold a heatsink which is actually less common than you might think.
Some laser goggles are a REALLY good idea, you will be able to burn with 300mA and you will be very tempted to do so.

Even periodic use of your laser like this with unprotected eyes causes cumulative, permanent damage. DON'T DO IT, seriously not worth it.
You will also need at least one 18650 battery, I like these ones.
DealExtreme: $9.57 TrustFire Protected 18650 3.7V True 2400mAh Rechargeable Lithium Batteries (2-Pack)
and a charger (I have bought 4 of these ones, cheap and easy)
DealExtreme: $7.39 Digital Li-Ion 18650 Battery Charger
I think that's about it ^_^

well usually any flashlight that has >15mm inner diameter and has some space for driver can be turned into a laser.
I think the best way to get a heatsink made is to ask someone from the kit-making members (jayrob, moh, FP etc...) to order the flashlight for him (you send him the money) and after it arrives he examines it, makes custom heatsink and sends it to you

I mean it has to open from the front end as well, pretty hard to assemble a laser from only the tailcap.

eghemus does heatsinks to...
