Default Help w/ phr803t flexdrive

I just put together my first blu ray laser and am having some problems. I used a phr-803t set at 120ma with a flexdrive. Whenever I turn on my laser, it lases for a fraction of a second before cutting out and if use it again right afterwards nothing happens, but if I wait it will lase for another split second. Is my diode fried or did I do something else? The assembly was so violent that I'm kind of surprised it does anything at all.

Check your batteries, as they may be dead.
Or, check your solder connections.

Default Re: Help w/ phr803t flexdrive

I would say haphazard but I think violent really describes it better. I dropped the bare diode on my dusty floor TWICE, I broke a little thing off the flexdrive and had to reattach it, i used a really old soldering iron with a huge eaten-up tip, and I broke the negative wire off the flexdrive while trying to strip it. Maybe I should take up another hobby...
Anyway, I just tried it with some new batteries and it actually works!!! Thanks everyone for the info. I was using what I thought were "pretty new" batteries already, and without your help I probably would have just chalked it up as another loss and moved on to some other project. Now, however, I'm thinking about making a green pointer, or making a pocket-sized version like I wanted to instead of the project box I ended up with.

Why exactly shouldn't I use alkalines? Is it just the lower voltage or the basic inferiority or will it actually hurt my diode/driver? Also, can anyone recommend a place to get some good rechargeable AAAs/ a charger?

Alkalines have a very big voltage sag.
Once you put them in, they sag to 1/3 of the voltage they are at without a load.

Very low performance.
