Help: Using a module from a cheap laser into a build?

Quick question on the module...I'm planning to make about a 40mW 650nm laser, and was wondering if I could use a module from another cheap 5mW laser and use it with a DVD burner diode I have. Is this possible?
JBasically I'm trying to avoid online buying, shipping and handling, etc...low budget here, plus I'm just trying to test things out before investing more money in it)

Probably not, becouse the driver of that cheapy laser may be pretty crappy, and too low for your 40mW build

What if I got a module housing? That's what I think I'm missing, really.
If I pot modded the driver to about 40mW, should the DVD burner diode be able to sustain that?

If it is even possible to pot mod the driver to get the diode to output 40mW, then yes I'd say you could do it. You will need a module to house your diode in though.

Now the real question is, how will you know how much current you are going to be throwing at the diode? You can't just solder on the new diode and crank up the power. Well... I guess you could, but you run the risk of killing your diode. You'll need to use a test load - especially because you don't know what your driver is even capable of outputting.

Are you saying that the driver would get fried because it can get over done if it's modded too much? I know I'm going to need to get a test load, but how much power am I looking at just to make a visible beam for a red laser, then (not burning)?

Lol, and I don't know if you just took a lucky guess or what...but I did intend on soldering the diode to the driver.. I wanted to follow something similar to what DTR did with his MXDL pen
