So I successfully removed my laser from a DVD burner (its a Sony DRU-800A) and I don't know how to get it to work. I tried just leaving the ribbon cable on the diode and sticking a needle through each wire (theres a positive and negative no ground) and connecting it to 2 AA batteries but nothing happened. I hope I didn't mess anything up but I just wanted to know whats the safest way to get this working. Would a resistor be a must? What I did probably didn't work and I hope nothing bad happened because of it. Thanks

Read some of the tutorial threads first.
Laser diodes are pretty ESD-sensitive, so it may have died if you didn't observe proper precautions when extracting it.
In any case, NEVER EVER hook up batteries directly to the diode. The current spikes can and will kill it.
You need to build or buy a driver to power your diode. If you plan on building one (they're really cheap and simple to make), here's a useful site: Laser driver - It can be done

Agreed with everyone else. Read. Trust me. It works. Haha^^ I lurked and read for about 3 months before I even joined, and another month before I attempted a build. There is an absolute goldmine of information here...and the search button is your gold pan
That has to be the #1 thing people get scolded here for- not using the search button. And if that doesn't work, try putting your key words in quotes. Such as "red dvd laser" instead of red dvd laser. It will make the search more precise. And if THAT doesn't work, browse the section that you want info on. And actually go back a page or a few. It helps. And if that doesn't work....eat a twinkie. They're pretty good.
