Default help with new diode (4 pin?)

hello im new to this forum and lasers but i do know a little bit about lasers

today i opened up an all dvd player from a shitty commuter to get the diode out i succeeded and got a few extras as well, i know that diodes can have multiple pins usually 3 but my diode has 4 i searched in 4 pin diodes and read a little on it.
the dvd play that i got it from isnt a blue ray player.

is the diode inferred (i personally doubt it considering how old the computer is)

Welcome to the forums. No need to mention that you obtained the dvd player from a "shitty computer". Instead, how about you give us the model number of the DVD player? Also do note that if this is indeed a player and not a burner, you're diode is going to be weak.

Google - Liteon XJ-HD166S 16x DVD Drive

The only thing that drive is good for is practicing your harvesting skills. DVD reading diodes are weak. That diode you have is a Red and IR combo diode. I'm not sure as to the pin configuration for it but if you use the search button I'm sure you can definitely pull it up as I know I've seen it here before. Again, the diode is weak and won't do anything impressive.

4 pin diodes are usually red/infra-red diodes, the phr-803t sled has this kind of diode on it.

But yes, it's a weak diode.

yeah... too bad you can't see the beam, or get it to burn anything. If you are going to make this laser I suggest IR blocking glasses, because even tho its weak, it can still harm your eyes. Please read more on the forum to get a broader idea of how lasers work then you will have better success with future lasers... BTW if you had to struggle to remove the diode.. chances are you have wrecked it. Also you must remember to wear a ESD bracelet to reduce the chance of killing the diode!

Hope everything works out great! Welcome to the forum! -Adrian

i did have a struggle to release the diode i thought it would be a Powder Metallurgy heat sink which is brittle and easy to break away but it turned out to be a malleable metal.

i was going to split the IF beam and defocus it to make night vision just an experimental thing

Just be careful, even if we say it is 'weak', it could still harm your eyes... (just in case you did not know already)

You could end up with night vision (darkness) for the rest of your life!

Just for some information, here's a thread that show's the 4 pin red/IR diode from a PHR sled:
PHR-803T red/IR diode pinout and currents
