Help!! My laser scares me!

I just got myself a 50mW green laser ((50mW 6 in1 green laser pointer [OLGL6-1] - $32.06 : Welcome to O-Like.com, Your source for laser products)) and it is a bit more powerful than I was expecting. I'm responsible about how I use it and its great for using outside but I get nervous when using it inside around pets and other people. Most people who buy lasers want all the power they can get and so do I, just not all the time. I want a way to be able to decrease the power for indoor use so its not so bright. I couldn't find any info on how to do this so could you all put me on the right track?

My first thought was to filter the beam directly but that would waste power and create a lot of heat. The only other option I can think of is to use a resistor or small potentiometer to lower the power of the batteries. Would using an under powered battery/resistor battery series do any damage to the laser? Any input would be appreciated.

Well you could put an IR filter in to remove any IR leakage, that will help make the laser less dangerous. You could also buy a pair of goggles that protects against 532nm light.

Hah, ARGLaser, you got trolled.

Check this out. Thread title "Help, my laser scares me" and the opening poster is "i am a dog" and unlike every other noobs out there, he is incredibly enough, interested in *lowering* the power of the laser.

Riiight.

I can't believe somebody would take that seriously.

Do you get a little nervous when using guns near other people?

You weren't supposed to use pwerful lasers near pets and other people, man.

first:The name doesn't matter, it was the first thing I thought of, Second: I didn't mean to buy a gun, I meant to buy something between a real gun and a Nerf gun. I figured the 50mW laser would end up being under-spec. I know I'm not supposed to use powerful lasers near pets and other people, that's why I posted.

:lasergun:

There was nothing inflammatory or provocative about my original post so why would you think I was trolling? I just don't fit the 14-16 year old demographic that usually posts 'noob' questions on here. Is wanting a more versatile laser that can provide appropriate power in different settings too unreasonable?

Funny, I feel the same way about my high power lasers and have ordered some low power ones for more casual lase-ing. I think it's a legitimate question.

I just wouldn't use 50mw around pets or people indoor. Too many household objects are reflective or shinny.
What batteries dose it take? Link to your laser?

No, you cannot simply decrease the power of your laser in real time.

For something like making the laser actually reach lower maximum power, you'd need to take it fully apart and construct a new driver for the laser which permits only so much current into the diode which will result in your wanted output power.

50mW ain't all that scary anyway. If you want an actual safe power level laser, certified, take a look here:

P.S.

The name doesn't matter, it was the first thing I thought of...
Exactly. It DOES matter. It's the very first impression you left on the people when coming here and making your first post. Nobody always think the name is important, when it's the very first thing people in the internet communication remember you by and associate you with. If you really aren't a creative individual, and it's not unusual, not many people are, you could've just simply written "John" or "JohnDoe" or if you're really interested in associating your self with a dog, then "Dog" ?

Everytime you ask me for help I'll say "Oh yes that's the one everybody thought was trolling at that one thread there". First impressions ... ;)

Don't shine Class 3b lasers around other people or animals, or hell, even yourself indoors unless all living things in the vicinity have goggles, or it's shining on a very matte surface far away from any of those living things.

Actually, I wish I saw more <= 5mw products on the market in cyan(?)(473) / blue / violet / yellow / orange.

I wouldn't mind having a "matched" set, 5mw, CBVYO
