both of them had a square shaped piece of glass/what have you, but the one in the heatsink also had a circular one.

If you can post some pictures it might help.

As to what to feed them, you should get a hit on Google, or similar, with the serial number telling you what write speeds they are and this should give you an indication, (post the link when you find it). If you've got a DDL driver then you don't have to worry about the voltage as it will sort that out but just start of low and gently work your way up. As they may not be well known or documented, you are really guessing at what is a safe level but once you hit lasing threshold you should be able to turn it up a little and be confident. The red is likely to be a fair bit weaker than the IR though.

Not much specific info there so I'm sorry but it may help with the thought processes! :D

I just managed to get the small chip desoldered from the pins....as this is the first diode I have managed to harvest, I do not have any drivers....also, it seems extremely small....it is approximately 3mm long not including the pins and between 3.5 and 5.5 mm wide depending on if you include the copper part. The numbers printed on it are J96610A and I will see if I can get pictures from photobooth up. Looked up the numbers many different ways but could not get any hits...
