Default help harvesting/extracting diode from GH22NP20

Hello, I had a spare GH22NP20 lg 22x dvd burner, and decided to try at the "kipkay laser flashlight hack"...

so I have taken apart the burner, and have a couple diodes, I believe....they seem to have no response to 2 double a batteries, and I want to make sure I have extracted the diode, etc....

would it be possible for someone to post a few pics of the diode, so I can see if I have the right thing, etc...? or to shed some light on extracting the diode from this particular burner?

thanks in advance

if you read the FAQ you would know that hooking the AA batteries straight to the diode would fry them

I would suggest reading around a bit and learn about how to use drivers and reading the FAQ

Well it is good that you found us, but it may be too late for these diodes

Peace,

ya, probably too late....oh well, it was just a spare...

as for now, what would be my best option for a quick burning red laser?

I already have an aixiz housing on the way, the 650nm 5mw 12X30mm case one.....

what would be the best diode for me to use with this? preferably one that I don't have to extract from a dvd burner, unless that would be a fair amount cheeper....like is there a particular site you would recommend that I buy a particular diode from?

thanks

Check the "Buy/Sell/Trade" and the "Group Buys" boards for "long open can" diodes (or the LPC sled). You can usually get them already extracted for less than $20. You should then either build or buy a current regulating driver. Set the driver for around 400mA-420mA. this will give you around 250mW of red burning power. There are even some members that will sell you a module with the diode and driver already installed for less than $40. Then all you need is 6V of power to burn stuff

Peace,
dave

thanks, another quick question Dave, what is the role of the aixiz housing, other than holding the diode, and acting as a heat sink....anything?

It also holds the lens (and allows it to be focused) and if you use a Rkcstr type driver, the driver can be housed inside the module.

Also, for a high powered burning red laser, you will need more heat sink than just the AixiZ module.

Peace,
dave
