Help with first laser build!

So I'm just getting into lasers, and already have bought a few from several different companies, and now am thinking about building my own. I think the way these things work is incredible! Anyway, I just need some help from you pro's out there, I'm not sure even where to begin or what to buy or where to get the materials... My goal is a red or green laser preferably 300+ mW. Thanks for any help!

The laser diode
laser diode driver
heatsinks and whey they are important
laser modules
collminating lenses (glass vs acrylic)
what is a mW and W
what is Wavelength
pros and cons of red vs green lasers
Laser safety
