Ok, so I have no idea what I am talking about. No, seriously, I have no idea. I would like to make a handheld pulse laser. I have a 42mm x 3.5mm neodymium ruby laser rod. I also have a xnenon flash tube from a canon camera. Thats it. I have no knowledge, no skills, no experience (aside from a couple of laser builds).

I realy want to at least look into this, can anyone help me?

Is it ruby, or garnet? I don't think it can be both.

Either way, this is VERY dangerous. Start with class 3a or 3b.

I highly doubt a camera flash will have the necessary power to excite the rod.

You would also need a flash chamber to excite the rod from all sides.

Cypragon: I just finnished my first 1000mw, I think I can handle it, I will be realy carefull I promise! It is a ruby.

Solonar: do you know where I can buy it/how I can build it? The flash chamber, I mean.

Sorry, these are actually in paper! ( oh the horror, it is with me still!) I read in a book yesterday that 300v will KILL YOU. I almost never get the wiring just right on the first try, and I dont trust myself not to short something out and either die or become a vegetable! Not that I would care at that point, but I would hate to leave a mess...

Yes, a device like this utilizes high voltage that will kill by electrocution. No attempt to use or build a solid state pulse laser system should be by anyone not totally familiar with high voltage/energy circuitry. + Rep. :)

yup, these things can be nasty, my YAG has a a 330V 1200uF cap bank, its about 65J of energy. More than enough to knock you flat on your ass, or weld screw drivers together :D

If it indeed is a ruby rod, it uses chromium as the medium. ND yag or glass rods use neodymium. :)
