Good for my first DIY? (BluRay)

I'm new to lasers. I want to make my own bluray laser but didn't know how to start. So I found this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180363372672 module in ebay which comes together with a driver kit and is claimed to be 150mW. Is this a good choice? Also, I want to make my laser handheld, so I'm also gonna need a host. Which do you suggest me? And could all the parts (module, heatsink, batteries etc.) fit in a handheld host? Thanks in advance!

if you dont mind buying from different sources you could buy the phr and the aixiz module from www.hightechdealz.com it is a great company. I see you are gonna build the driver. you can get all the parts you need from radio shack. check out member rog8811 signature he has a link there that has all the info on how to build and test the driver. good luck.

Chipdouglas thanks for your reply! I think www.hightechdealz.com is a good choice because they also have worldwide free shipping. Howewer, would I be able to fit my DIY laser into a (handheld) host? And what host should I use? What about the heatsink?

Ok..you are going to want a host that will take 3 AAA batteries. I say this because I am guessing that you are going to make a driver that will need about 9 to 12 volts in order to run a Blu-Ray diode. Instead of using 3AAA batteries, use 10440 batteries. They are 3.6volt lithium batteries that are the same size as a AAA battery. You can find these batteries by searching for them in google.

Buy your host from www.dealextreme.com you will end up saving money that way.
Something like this

would most likely be just fine for your first host. Look at the other lights on DX first before you make your descision. Just make sure that it looks like there is plenty of room to put everything and also make sure that it uses 3AAA batteries.

As for your driver being able to fit in a host, that all depends on how small you make it. :)


As for the heat sink, use alluminum. :)

That is the best thing that you should do. Do a few weeks of studying up before you make your final descision. That way, when you do decide to make one, you will already know what to expect.

You can only use two 10440, they reach 4.25v each when fully charged. Get a host/heatsink combo from www.modwerx.com. You can also get the module and diode if you want there.

I reccomend the rkcstr driver, but I know they are hard to get a hold of =(

I would also look at some of jayrob's kits he sells. Someone made a list a little while ago of all of them. He has lot's of interesting hosts and he include's heat sinks and usually any modification that needs to be done. Be sure to check them out ;)

you took the words right outa my mouth Gata! lol Jayrobs kit are by FAR the best quality host/heatsink combos for the price range. MY personal favorite is the Pocket Mini! You must take a look at this Jiannis.

it is one of the smallest, sleekest hosts around IMO. you must use a dr.lava flexdrive V4 though, it is a VERY small buck/boost driver that will fit in the pocket mini AND it only takes ONE rechargable tiny CR2 battery! take a look at the pictures of the host on the back of his hand. its about the size of your pointer finger.

if you choose to "build" a driver, it will be the LM317 driver or close to it, wich is rather large. you must find a host with a large space, or "pill" to fit the LM317 in. look at the picture next to my post, my avatear. my first build i built the LM317 and could only fit it in this host... about as small as you can get it that way. the flex drive is a much better option for stability and size. and its not very expensive either. heres the link.

this is a VERY nice build, take a good look at all of jayrobs links in his signature, he has MANY builds and options to choose from. he is reasonably cheap, and ships FAST i hear ^_^

i hope this information helps you in your descision. the reason i suggest the flexdrive is you are FAR less likely to blow your diode with that driver, than with the LM317 wich can be fickle sometimes. "ive lost 6+ diodes in the past two months using LM317's, havent lost one with a flex."

I have used 3 with no issues what so ever. It just ran a bit hotter.
You are talking about this driver right?

Hey, I don't know what you did with your host, but the pocket mini that Jayrob sells uses one CR123A battery or an RCR123A battery. I too, highly recomend buying a host from Jayrob and the pocket mini is an excellent build. :)

my mistake, it does use an (R)CR123a battery, not a CR2. thank you for the correction. and iskor, the version i build has no diode, and uses only 1 1ohm resistor at the output so Ma can be measured. the cheap way i guess. but i use a 35v CAP, its a little larger than the 25v, or 15v we usualy use. the LM317 can be very reliable, but it cannot compare to a flex unless your building a labby style lazer or something. but for leadlights "pen lasers for those who dont know" the rkcstar driver or the flexdrive v4 are the way to go IMO because of their size, and stability. not to mention a MUCH smaller power requirement for the flex. but its more of a question of what you want to spend VS the space in wich you have to work with.

I agree with you 100%.:) I personally use the Flexdrive V4 more than the Rkstar due to it's size difference and the lower power requirements too. :)

Also the diode is just there to prevent you from frying the diode by mistakenly reversing the polarity of the power supply.

Thanks for all your answers guys! I think I'm gonna use the Flexdrive driver and buy the diode from hightechdealz. But about the host, isn't $43 plus shipping too much for the pocket mini? The final price will be about $100 if I use the components I mentioned..
