Ah ok I see now. I thought the coin had to touch the sides of the host.

I think I'll try that when I get a V5. I'll use a penny.

But is the pill on the 18650 jayrob host really that good at transferring the heat?

The 18650 host even thou it has less mass than the MXDL it does have bare threading for the pill allowing heat to transfer to the host. Just get good contact with the pill by grinding a flat surface on the penny and you should be good. The Hotlights host has very little mass to it. It is basically a thin aluminum tube and I did an 6 minute run with it.

EDIT: I just found two 1979 pennies on my work area. 95% copper! I finally have a use for pennies! ( I hate pennies ... worthless bastards )

DTR I owe you big time for this info. 1 free animation hows that sound? I'm not the best at it but I'm pretty good.

I am sure if you look around you can find some place that will have foreign currency for close to face value. Maybe a local bank.

Very nice DTR. +1
As jayrob mentioned the bare threads when tightened have approximately 45% of the threads "V" well pressed together making it a very good transfer point due to the diameter. That is a lot of surface area.
What is the brand of thermal adhesive you used?

Leodahsan, if you have a local bank, many times they will not reissue foreign currency. You can buy it from them for face value if you ask. Just tell them you are a coin collector.

Edit: DTR, forgot to mention that nice looking grinding spot on your thumb. lol I recognize that mark all to well. Wife asked me to do something before I hit enter.....on the bank. Maybe a local store too.

I can send you a few coins. Just found a bunch of them laying around.

Just pay for the prestamped envelope. I'll find out how much it would cost to go to brazil

I would have lost $ on that. Looks me and a grinder tangling. The perfect sopt on your thumb. Soldering huh? Not enough flux!

I was going to offer to send him some, but it would be faster if he went to a bank or a local store where travelers might go.

I need copper for the Jayrob 18650 host and unfortunately a nickel is just over the 20mm of space the host has.

Hey Jay

I worked on setting up my 18650 host today. A nickel will fit nicely.

I will update with the final build when I am done. But thought you might want to know it is possible. I have a 1941 nickel (75% copper and 25% nickel) ready to go in.

I noticed that the nickel would have fit if that part of the pill was missing because they are both practically the same width. But I think I'll stick with the pennies because of the copper.

DTR do you have any available V5's I could buy off of you? I really want to do this build.

Hey Jay

I worked on setting up my 18650 host today. A nickel will fit nicely.

Here is the pill as it is unaltered.

p1011688r.jpg

I take the pill and grind the lip off it. Then I flip it upside down, put the little board for the contact points in and secure it with krazy glue. You can see the pill is sitting perfectly flush with the walls of the host. I will hit the host edges down with the grinder a little bit to expose the bare metal.

p1011720.jpg

Then I tested to make sure that my contact points are good.

p1011725.jpg

This is how the nickel will be bonded with the host. It has enough room you could mount the Flexdrive on the inside or outside of the pill.

p1011721.jpg

Here is the host with the head screwed on.

p1011724.jpg

With the copper heatsink that I got Jayrob it leaves about twice the height of the flexdrive in the cavity under the heatsink.

I will update with the final build when I am done. But thought you might want to know it is possible. I have a 1941 nickel (75% copper and 25% nickel) ready to go in.

Once again, very creative...

I would just suggest to machine down the top of the pill so that it is level. That way you are gluing the FlexDrive directly to the pill.

But that's easy to say if you have the tools. If you don't have a lathe, it will not be very pretty just grinding it flat...

That would work nicely as well but since I don't have a lathe I work with what I got.

Any word from the good Dr on the next batch. I saw you said that you talked with him a while back. Any updates?

Funny you should ask...

I actually just received my order of V5 FlexDrives!

Now I can't speak for drlava, because I see that his order page still says 'out of stock'.

I can tell you that I paid in advance a couple of weeks ago and was promised that I would get my order first.

I should also mention, that those waiting on V5 FlexDrive kit orders with me, had their orders in a separate stack. (waiting for the drivers) Now those orders will be combined with my other others. But they all will still be built per 'date paid'...
