The guys here cleared it all up ;)

What I have to say is that even if you fail on your first attempt and the diode dies, don't give up. Many members didn't succeed at once and now look at them, they're playing with high power awesomeness and eating cereal.

Hmm, that's worth taking into consideration. What kind of current would the diode require for that kind of power? Like 150mA?

Typically the PHR and GGW will get a 1:1 (mA : mW) output with an acrylic lens. With the 405-G-1 you will gain between 26-30% efficiency of your output. For example, my PHR @ 156mA measured 142mW with a crap lens. It hits 180mW with the 405-G-1.

Okay, I'm going to go off on a slight tangent. I now have a question about 8x BluRay diodes.

I've read some mixed opinions on this, but basically I'm wondering if this setup would work: would an 8x diode (specifically, a BDR-S03) function properly at, say, around 350mA (325 would be acceptable as well) running off of a rkcstr driver from two 3.7V CR123A's (totaling 7.4V)? And what kind of power would you get from that if you were to use Jay's 405-G-1?

Another questionable setup: would it work with a FlexDrive (same current - 350mA) running off of a single 3.7V 14500 (or, if not, what about two 3.0V CR123A's, with a diode in series to drop the voltage)?

Sorry for the thread necromancy. I just thought it'd be better than making a whole new thread!

so far it's shown to be able to run on both at 350mA...and that that current with a 405-g-1 lens we should get the 400mW range...

Right, but don't the diodes need a certain voltage to get to the lasing threshold? Which is why I was wondering if the FlexDrive setup would work, it only being 3.6V.

That's what the FlexDrive does. It is a 'boost' circuit. (or buck as well)

It will use extra current from the battery supply, and boost the voltage to what ever the diode is needing.

For 6 volts, the max current is around 300mA's per Dr. Lava. But some have had good results with higher currents using the FlexDrive/RCR123 combo.
