DVD RW Laser Powers?

My 52x DVD RW packed up on me a few days back so I am hoping I can salvage the laser out of it.

What kind of power would I be able to get from the laser out of that? The laser would be red and not IR right?

if its 52x then its cd and about 80-90mw max.

52x is the cd-r burning speed. They don't make DVD burners that fast yet, at least not in consumer electronics.

Look up the model number online and find out what the DVD-R burning speed is and report back, that will give us a better idea

52x is the cd-r burning speed. They don't make DVD burners that fast yet, at least not in consumer electronics.

Doh!

Cant find much on it, the model is HP dvd1035. All I found was this.

Read Speed: 48x (CD) / 16x (DVD)
Rewrite Speed: 32x (CD) / 6x (DVD-RW) / 8x (DVD+RW)

from what I found, it says "up to 20x" for DVD-R burning. So, it should have a decent diode in it. Only one way to find out, take it apart! It may have one of those weird plastic diodes, which is no good to you. But, it may have a power closed or open can diode. Take it apart and keep us posted

Ok some progress, the inside of mine is rather different from the one on the tutorial. I got this far, do I just take the metal plate off the top where the little lens is?

The diodes you want are on the "under" side of the sled in your picture. Under that lens is another lens.

After that,
You may only see a small flex circuit with three small soldiered pins showing.
Un-soldier it from the pins before you extract the diode.

Ok the sleds out I just need to find a screw driver tiny enough to get the screws off it.

Can't get the damn screws out.

All I have succeeded in doing is cutting my hands while trying to get them out. I have no grip on this piddly scred driver and the main screw holding it together is screwed AND glued in.

buy a nice little set of mini screw drivers with a decent handle on them. if your using the small metal ones with a handle about as thick as the screw you wont be able to get very good leverage.
