DTR module too long for survival host?

I have a dtr m140 diode/module and a survival laser s4 host with pill/driver. The problem im running into is there seems to be no room in between the pill and the heat sink for any wires let alone any room for the module. Is there any way for these two to go together? Should i just unscrew the silver case from the copper module?

yeah you shouldnt be using the back half of the module... only the part with the diode pressed in it

Yes you can remove the back half for the diode module but the new modules are coming with the solid thermal back halfs which are a tad shorter than the old back half and will fit in the SL host so keeping it on is better for heat dissipation.:)

For those with a full drop in module with diode and driver I recommend keeping the back half on it will protect the driver from shorting on anything or accidental binding when removing which could take off a diode pin. For a SL host ad one of my diode/driver modules use either the extended sink options or the drilled driver pill and it will fit fine.

Is the heat sink supposed and pill supposed to be so close? It seems like due to the host design there has to be a one inch section of the host in between the pill and the diode, or not set the module into the heat sink. Am i supposed to stuff over an inch of wire into the 1/8" recess of the pill? Just looking for clarification before i cut and solder.

Yeah it's suppose to be like that. You can trim the wires coming from the back of the diode. Are you using there driver as well. I've built quite a few of the s4 host.

I was shocked when attempting my first build as well. The sheer lack of space was appalling and I actually ended up using my dremel tool to drill the middle part of the pill out so I had more room. Never tried any of the survival lasers hosts, so if they have already mounted te driver into the pill just connect the wires. You will find the wires bend much better than you might think.

The lack of space is quite normal. The S4 and similar hosts are designed for maximum sized heatsinks in a small host so there is little extra space. When I build with them I use wires about two inches long to go from the diode to the driver. The key is assembly order:

-Solder everything up.
-Screw the pill in place
-Screw the front head of the host on
-Slide the module into the heatsink and tighten down the setscrew once the module is aligned
-Coil the wires as needed into the heatsink cavity and slide the heatsink into place while feeling for wires possibly being pinched and adjusting as needed
-Secure it with the crown ring but make sure the heatsink does not rotate with the ring with pressure from your thumb (make sure your thumb is clean and will not get debris inside the diode)

Does anyone know the total length of the copper SL heatsink ?

There are 3 copper SL (Survival Laser) heatsinks: regular size, extended with sight taper up front, and extended with really long taper up front.

Which one do you have?

Not sure of the exact dimensions but since this old thread is being pulled up I should note there have been some changes since this build. The diode modules now come with a solid thermal back half which is a little shorter than the old hollow aluminum ones. They will fit in any of the SL hosts without removing the back and loosing the extra thermal advantage of the solid back half. For my full drop in units the diode modules with driver installed you will still need either of the extended heatsinks or the drilled pill option to fit the entire module.:beer:

All 3 Survival Laser hosts are the same size using the same pill or heat sinks, I recommend using the drilled pill whenever possible, otherwise you will have to keep your wires reasonably short, especially if you use an extended heat sink but with the drilled pill you will have enough room.

@ Windrider You should try it with stiff PVC insulated wire that is what every one was using until I brought silicone wire into this arena and I know that is what DTR puts in his modules and for the very reason as it is so flexible :D

When you are referring to the drilled pill, I assume you mean the one with the big hole in the middle.

If the drilled pill gives more room (the extra 1/2 inch of room inside the pill), why do they even make one without the hole? Is it for those who have a circular board driver? In which case you need the no-hole one, right?

Yep that is the one. Sure it would be nice if he modified every one but it is extra work to machine them out and not every build requires it so it is an option. It would also be nice if every host came with a contact board but some use drivers that press into the pill so no contact board is needed so it is also an option.:)
