Applied Biosystems 310 DNA Sequencer

This is 30 minutes from my house. Does anyone know what laser would be inside? like a Argon-Ion laser or what power? The listing says its free I'm trying to contact the seller now.

I need help to know if its worth my time to get it.

Thanks,
Grant

There's an argon in there of some sort.. I have no idea who's though, of how powerful. If the asking price is true, I'd say it's worth a 30 minute drive..

Hard to say with stuff like that, bobboyce just got a sequencer off ebay and it didn't have an argon :(

But do let me know if the unit is indeed free, as I think I'd go and get it regardless (if you don't want it that is =P )

If my research is correct, the Applied Biosystems 310 model uses both the 488nm and 514nm lines for fluorescent excitation. This should have a multi-line argon in it. It may only be rated at 25mW, but that doesn't mean it can't/won't do more.

I have read reports of this laser only being rated for 10mW. Still worth the drive/price here.

If I was close enough, I would go for it.

Peace,
dave

@ MarioMaster -- Yeah, you have to do some research on these sequencers. Some only do the "growing" of the plates and the fluorescing is done in a different unit. Also, there is a different type that uses low power IR light to detect the DNA lines.

Thanks for your help. I agree, even if its 10mW its worth my drive. But if anything comes up, then its all yours MarioMaster. It's kind of hard to believe it is free..

Dave your what? around 2000 miles away? That's just a quick drive down I-80 =) lol

I Just shot them an email, so ill post how it goes.

Thanks,

I have not been able to contact that seller thus far but I came across this:
Lasers : Vintage Models by Coherent Labs (Argon) & Hughes

"Laser #1 appears to be a Coherent Laboratories Argon Laser, Model 54, with its regulated Ion Power Supply.
It is probably a 488 nanometer unit. This unit is large and heavy. I am
selling for best offer, as is, where is, in Piscataway, NJ 08854."

I cant seem to find any info on this laser but maybe its because I don't know where to look. He said the power supply is 2 cubic feet and requires 2 people to handle... He doesn't have any info on it either.

Those will be huge ion lasers, and will probably require 3phase. I think I'd also toss him an offer for them since I have access to 3phase in my dorm and in my school. Are you gonna go after these big lasers?

edit, the second one isn't an argon, maybe some kind of flowing gas laser. hard to say what it is without more information

I was on the phone with him today. He is an older man but doesn't know very much about the lasers them selves. I think he has his own buissness of selling old machinery.

Yes they do seem to be 3 phase, and only the first is an argon. I would love to own it but I do not have access to a 3 phase plug, so it's all yours if you want it. He is asking around 150$, "if he doesn't have to do any heavy lifting" lol. I wouldn't expect him to, so bring a friend to help. If you do get it be sure to take some pictures because I am kind of dieing to see what it looks like.

Im still on a hunt for a cheap argon. No reply about that DNA Sequencer.

Edit: Ill email him again stating that I cant use it because of the plug but that you are interested.

Haha I know what you are thinking, 150$ is not bad at for an argon, But I don't think I can find a way to power this one and if it didn't work I wouldn't readily know how to fix it.

Yeah. Lasers like this are usually a project when they arrive.

Yea, I understand. Don't consider me ignorant... My attitude for learning about them is at 100%. I am very interested in these kind of things but I wouldn't want to get stumped on the project, and let it collect more dust. My wallet isn't deep enough to do that yet, I'm still in college. I guess I need to learn more about what to expect in an argon ion before I purchase.

I used to fix machines like this, It will have a uniphase 2114-20ml laser inside of it if it is a newer unit, some units have the 4-VL or a 15-SLB which is a violet blue, and turquoise blue in color respectively. The laser is not the most interesting part in it. The most interesting part imho is the multiwavelengh beam splitter assembly that combines RG&B into a single beam. PS if it works it's worth a LOT MORE whole as a sequencer... You could easily sell it for about 2-3 grand if you can show it working.
