Hey guys,

So I just had my first attempt at building a laser...  I was going for the DIY Blu-Ray Dorcy Jr. build...   I underestimated how small the Dorcy actually was, and as a result may or may not have manhandled my flexdrive a bit too much...  <.<   Just the drive broke, but I did learn something from it -- my home-made circuit on a breadboard actually worked perfectly well, even without the wire connecting the LM317 to the resistors  :D   I was able to burn things and light matches, pop balloons, etc with the diode connected to that (9v battery).

So, that brings me here yet again - I plan to try again (my host is still in tact)...   I need advice on how to fit everything into the Dorcy without letting anything touch, but while still keeping the diode steady.  I figure its safe to assume I wont be using the back half of the Aixiz module...   It seems like even without the back side of the module, even if I directly connect the flexdrive to the diode, there isn't even enough room...

Also, I use 20 gauge wire... I assume it'd be a good plan for me to go get thinner wire?

One final thing - I'm pretty sure my little star piece is electrically isolated (used a dental pick, dug pretty deep, stabbed myself in the thumb  :-/ ), but even so, I see a lot of silver...  Thats ok, right, since its not copper?


::EDIT:: I'll be buying a set-strength driver this time... I'm thinking 125 sounds good? Opinions?

Using the Full Body dark horse heatsink is much easier, check out instructions here, http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/272/1/

And if you want to use a normal dorcy heat sink (not full body), you have to put the flexdrive flat on top of that star shaped piece and be very creative with the wiring. It may help to use a bit of electrical tape (or shrink tubing) to isolate the connections so everything doesn't short out.

It takes a lot of precision and dedication to get everything to fit in that tiny space in the Dorcy.. as you've found out.

to your edit: 125mA is alright. I'd go with 140-150mA though if you're using a heat sink. Possibly 160mA.

and if you want a nice power boost check out JayRob's 405G-1 glass lenses for 405nm, he claims 28% increase but I think that's more of maximum.

Wow, 160 would be a bit more than i was expecting, I'll stick with ~145 then I think,  ;D .  And I was looking at those lenses, but I don't want anything TOO dangerous for now...  I still haven't bought any goggles (maybe with my next paycheck)...  It'd be a shame to have an awesome high power laser that I can't see because I'm blind...   You got a link to a pair that you would personally recommend?  Price isn't an issue.

Also, should I be getting thinner wire you think?   And does my driver HAVE to be the lava drive?  If I buy it pre-set its $30,   :-/ .

Now, with putting the drive on top of the star shaped piece - will I need to put electrical tape down between them?  Probably a dumb question, but better safe than sorry if I've already busted up 1 drive because I'm stupid -.-   ....and wouldn't the module and heatsink 'bob' up and down if its not a PERFECT fit?

I think I'll just dole out the extra cash and snag the full-body heatsink -.-  I'm lazy and like easy gratification.

My flexdrive survived cracking the top off the big thing and accidently desoldering somthing and then resoldered it and also lots of burn marks.

It works in my build perfectly!
