Default DIY blu just shut off when i was focusing.

* *Well i bought a kit from jay, which was probably one of the best kits ive ever worked with for anything. All i had to do was solder the 2 wires from the diode to the ones from the driver, which i think i managed to screw up . It was working fine for a little while after i managed to figure out how to get it to focus... the little black lens ring in the aixiz wouldnt turn with the nut. I dont know if its suposed to or not but oh well, it works.
* *Later on after i got done messing arround i tried to focus it so i could burn a match at a bigger distance. (got one at about 4ft prior to this!!) When i soldered the wires from the diode my dad insisted that it wouldnt matter if we trimmed them down shorter, so my best estimate i have some where near a half inch of spare wire in there. Because of the extra wire i couldnt get it to tighten up perfectly in the head, so sometimes it would twist the wires... i think. Anyway i was adjusting the focus and the laser just shut off. I think i may have shorted something out on the driver. I wont know that till i get home though.
* *I ended up picking up a multimeter on my way to work today, so im assuming that if i put the clips or polls where the wires connect to the diode i should get a reading from there even if the diode is dead. From the first look at the innards last night after it shut down all of the connections seem unbroken and the side of the driver, although close isnt touching the side of the host. If i dont get a reading is it safe to assume it might be a wiring issue or i shorted the driver? Also if i did short the driver is there any way to reset it or am i SOL.

Thanks in advanced for the replys, i really hope i can fix this... damn do i love blu ray lol.
Dave, the most massive noob the world may ever know

QUICK EDIT: I checked the battery, its still close to full acording to my battery meter

You should - diodes that die of optical failure (most common cause) measure about their normal operating voltage. Usually there is some (weak, led-like) light you can see coming out as well in such cases.

If you shorted out the wires, and your driver is a constant current source, its likely undoing the short will fix the problem... unless the driver overheated and was damaged.

What does this mean? How many volts is it still putting out?

Peace,

that, as of yet i cant answer... i just tossed it in my cheep harbor freight battery tester and it ended up at the top of the green area on it. ill have to look at it with my meter when i get home. Im not positive but i think the positive batery contact was a tad bit warm when i opened it up just after it died.... ill update as soon as i get home.

The battery and/or battery contacts heating up is a good indication of a short circuit.

Peace,
dave

Well i promised an update after i got home, and got busy, and here i am so here we go lol.
Took the laser apart, looked it over. Didn't look like anything was broken. Put it back together and got a brief flicker of light from the diode, and then splat... no light any more. Also it doesn't seem like there is any current flowing from the driver to the diode either, so im going to guess that thats dead to. Well atleast i learned something from this lol. Hopefully attempt number 2 goes better than this one

not on the part that i can see.... perhaps on the bottom. I think i can chalk this one up to just a diode failure for whatever reason... atleast from what jay thinks from the way i described the issue to him. Thankfully he doesn't think i blew the driver so this might not get too expensive lol. Have to wait out the next few days while i get some more money together to get another diode lol.

Try a battery just in case. Battery meters are likely to be measuring for 1.2 volts instead of 3.6 or whatever you're using. It's always helpful to TRY to take some advice before shutting it out because of an amateur reader.
