Using this thread as an inspiration:

http://laserpointerforums.com/f42/8-beam-dump-idea-61607.html

I made this gizmo:

Out of these parts:

Left to right is:

1) One inch copper elbow, with a flange on one end.
2) One inch to 1 1/4 inch copper expander joint.
3) 2x 1 1/4 x 3/4 Schedule 40 PVC couplers. The inside is 3/4 inch threaded. The outside is not threaded.
4) 2x 3/4 inch threaded couplers that thread down inside item #3. The bottoms are not threaded. The ID of the non-threaded is 1 inch.
5) 2x 1 1/2 inch non-threaded coupler elbows.
6) 1x 1 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch reducing T.

Parts are assembled as follows:

Thread Item #3 into Item #2.

Add the T, Item #6

Add the copper elbow, Item #1

Add the copper expander joint, Item #2

And enjoy your new beam stop.

Only Items #1 and #2 are copper. The rest are schedule 40 white PVC.

Everything was painted with this using multiple coats inside and out:

Inside the copper elbow and not shown is a small about of this steel wool that has also been painted black.

The steel wool was placed to act as sort of a diffuser.

The beam stop seems to work fairly well although I have not had time to conduct a battery of tests yet. I made mine taller than the referenced beam stop so it would be easier to use with lasers set up on a tripod. It fact, it could really be 4 to 8 inches taller than shown to be ideal for use with my Gorilla Pod fitted with a laser clamp.

The part sizes above might not be exact, so experiment at Lowes or HD until you piece something together like you want.

The final assembly is not glued and is easily separable by hand.

Comments, suggestions, improvements and criticisms are always welcome.

Enjoy!

I like it... simple enough and it seems effective...:gj:
Thanks for sharing...

Nice and simple beam dump.

Might be good to turn the two bottom pieces in the same direction as the beam dump for added stability, and another two places to aim a laser:)

It will burn, so don't use this beamdump for a CO2 laser =P. I doubt <5W could ignite it though and that is purely a guestimation.

I haven't tried it yet, but I wondered about having to take it out of there. It is painted with the high-heat matte black paint though.
