Is this the diode I need?

I tried extracting the diode, not sure if it's the right thing though since it doesn't look like all others I see images of.
It's a weird square'ish diode, and has 4 very thin pins. I looked everywhere on the drive, but this is the only thing that could resemble it.

If this is the right one, how can I proceed from here?

thank you :)

couldn't attach image since I need 10 posts first, so i'll add it to attachments.

What is the make and model of the drive you got the diode out of?

It looks like there are coils on that thing you're holding, which probably means it's just the lens. Look in your sled where there are prisms. Usually the diodes are mounted in the sides of the sleds and "fire" into the prisms.

I searched a bit more and found this thing. No idea if it's it or not :p

In the middle I could see a screen like reflecting so I thought it might be in there.

if this is not it, I have no idea what is xD

i'll check and see if I can get the model info

That looks like one of the motors to spin or move the disc.

Post a picture of the sled (top and bottom).  We may be able to see the diodes.  Remember, they will be shining onto some sort of cube or mirrored plate.  Also, they will be inside a heat sink, so they won't "look like" the diodes you see in the pictures.  On the back side there will be a ribbon cable of some sort leading to it and you should see the pins sticking out through the ribbon cable.

Peace,
dave

All we need is a picture of the sled.  The sled should "ride" on a couple of round metal "rods."  It should look something like this:

dsc01134kq5.jpg

We don't need a picture of the whole drive, just the sled

Also the Model DRU-500AX appears to be a 4X DVD burner (made back in 2003).  It will have a red diode on it, but it will not be very powerful.  You will NOT get 16X-22X performance out of it.  Most people on the list only work with 16X or higher now.  You should be able to make a hanf held laser out of it, but it will not be close to the kinds of currents or outputs that you have been reading about in the forum.

Peace,
dave

It is really hard to tell from the blurry picture, but I'm going to hazard a guess.  Do you still have the parts you took off of the outer parts of the sled? I can see two places where there are round "holes" in the side with black plastic optics in front of them.  The diodes MAY still be inside the metal part (the heat sink) that was attached to the place where the round holes are.

We have found that laptops use some fairly funky diodes (flat, plastic, etc.).  I would steer clear of them.  Besides, you can get a 22X burner from someone in the forum here for around $18-$20.  Why tear up a drive?

This is from IT Reviews:

This is the first of the DVD-Dual format drives to hit the market, along with its sibling the external DRX-500UL (which has Firewire and USB 2.0 interfaces). It combines the fastest performance of both formats, writing DVD+R and +RW at 2.4-speed, DVD-R at 4-speed, DVD-RW at 2-speed and DVD read at 8-speed. It's no slouch when it comes to CD performance either, with write, rewrite and read speeds of 24, 10 and 32 respectively.

Did you have this as a working drive? I ask as it looks like all the LD's have been removed already, I have circled the most likely locations.
