Differences b/t materials?

So, as you can see, I'm new here. I've been following this site for a while, and am finally going to get started on making my own lasers... But I have a fee questions:

Making a DIY laser driver:
- What difference would it make to use a different strength resistor?
- ... Or a 25ohm pot instead of a 100ohm pot?
- What would be considered "optimum" for a red burning laser? ( I may make it green if my green diode still works)

Housing:
- Do you NEED to have an Aixiz module, or is there something comparable you can buy in a store (radio shack)?
- Can you use cheapo LED lights to house?

Sorry for posting a "omg halp me plz" as my first post, but these are questions I was unable to fine elsewhere on the site.

Thanks a lot, and I look forward to being a part of your community,
- Shammikaze (Jason)

Welcome

I've been following this site for a while, and am finally going to get started on making my own lasers... But I have a fee questions:

Making a DIY laser driver:
- What difference would it make to use a different value resistor?
- ... Or a 25ohm pot instead of a 100ohm pot?
It depends on whether it is a single turn or multi turn, single turn will be hard to fine adjust, multiturn would be just about right
- What would be considered "optimum" for a red burning laser?
You need to be more specific about your choice of laser diode....harvesting or buying?
( I may make it green if my green diode still works)
If you have a green it is not just a laser diode it is a whole optical assembly with a driver attached
Housing:
- Do you NEED to have an Aixiz module,
yes (easiest way certainly)
or is there something comparable you can buy in a store (radio shack)?
no
- Can you use cheapo LED lights to house?
no

Thanks for fast response.

I guess I'll go round up a bunch of materials and see what I can rustle up for a diode, then I'll post again later.

My green one is a whole assembly, as you said. And it's also a $5 eBay laser, so I dunno if it's usable anyway.

Are there other places to buy an Aixiz module (not online)? Really don't wanna lose the weekend to shipping.

Also, I plan to snag a PHR-803T sled at some point. I can use both diodes from it, right?

Thanks again,

No aixiz modules are only bought online, phr-803t all i use is the blu-ray diode, there is a infrared diode/red diode but its not much current and is also not worth the time to mess with, just buy a lpc-815 sled for 10 dollars.

HUH ??

"No aixiz modules are only bought online,"

Aixiz modules can be purchased on the internet from Aixiz.  The ones found on DX are very similar with plastic lenses.

That above post is difficult to understand.

I just snagged a PHR sled for 10.50... I think I'll tinker with the red diode first on a home-made driver, but I've also already purchased materials for a blu ray dorcy, so we'll see how that turns out. Hoping to get materials in this week.

I meant to say, "No, aixiz modules are only bought online", Sorry for the mix up bud.
