Did I break my new laser?

I had just gotten my 30mW CR2 laser from DX and I wanted to pot mod it but instead of using a battery I went and hooked up my transformer from which I selected 3 volts. It seems to work great minus the heating if it went on too long. So I was trying to get the most powerful beam until I basically gave up and said to leave it for tomorrow. The laser worked just fine then. Now I was about to try again to get the best setting but the ding seemed like it didn't want to start. So I tried both batteries and power source, but then when I looked inside (yes I do realize this is a stupid and dangerous thing to do) I noticed that there was only a tiny red light inside and its intensity increased/decreased as I adjusted the pot. So what exactly went wrong here?

Warning do NOT look into it anymore, that is loads of ir light... by chance did you happen to drop it or hit it hard, that would cause the crystals to come out of place and mess it up.

...lazer... ;D ;D ;D

I doubt he did, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was banged around by postal. These things come packaged poorly, so it's not a surprise that they bite it shortly after arriving. I bought 3 DX lasers. All three were fine, TEM00, exceeding rated outputs- for 2 weeks. Following that, the 2 keychain lasers dropped out to TEM01 and the other to fractions of a mW. Only the 50mW pointer type maintains its output, and it's barely 50mW. You get what you pay for with DX. You can get some real gems, but you can also get a few paperweights. You also should keep in mind that cheap shipping = cheap packaging, so they take more damage over their journey to get to you. Try contacting them at DX, and see if they'll do a swap for you. It may take time, but they are nice about resolving problems.

Maybe the transformer produced a voltage spike when turned on an fried the diode. It has happened to people before... :(

No, that's a crystal problem. My bet is what happened to the dead green I recently got. The coatings on the crystals were cooked. Probably by too much IR; it can simply heat them to the point that the coatings just cook.

^^^^ Yep thats my guess too, you fried the coatings on the crystals.
