Device ID question - Cooper Lasersonics whats it

Hi all,

New to the forum and I wanted to post here to see if anyone knows what this device I have is and its purpose.

I picked it a a while back, (the box came with it) and have been unable to find any references to it on the net. I am guessing that it is some kind of pre-electronic laser power meter, but that's just a guess. It has an illuminated reticule and when you look into the eyepiece there is a scale.

If you shoot a laser beam into one end, it has some kind of glass-metallic-ceramic shield the beam shows as a line on the scale, you can then rotate the counter on the back of the device until the line for the beam and the scale line up. Since I only have access to an old HeNe I have nothing else to compare the results with.

You can see pictures of it at the following URL.

Any thoughts, opinions, guesses etc are welcome and appreciated.

Thanks

No idea but I like it :)

I wonder if is to check wavelengths rather than power :-/

Rog,

Thanks for teh thought, I meant to say wavelength not power in my original post. You could be right as that was my best guess. Unfortunately, as I only have a old HeNe laser right now there is no really effective way for me to test that idea. I guess I could snag a cheapie diode laser and see if there is any difference on the scale compared to the HeNe.

What should the wavelength of an HeNe laser be? It's an old Melles Geriot unit.

Awaits input from the gassers of the forum..... ::)

Buy yourself a cat toy laser from the dollar store to see if it does anything.
I would suggest a cheap greenie, it would be interesting to see if it registers the IR or the green wavelength.

Isn't the wavelength of He-Ne lasers 632.8nm ...

The red HeNe laser wavelength is usually reported as 632nm. However, the true wavelength in air is 632.816 nm, so 633nm is actually closer to the true value.  633nm RED is typical BUT there are a variety of visible transitions, including a green (543.365 nm, the so-called GreeNe laser), a yellow (593.932 nm), a yellow-orange (604.613 nm), and an orange (611.802 nm) transition.
